Fighting climate change

Fighting climate change

SThree’s purpose is to “bring skilled people together to build the future” – a sustainable future for everyone. We recognise the importance of ensuring long-term sustainability through concerted and transparent climate and environmental action. We set transparent and measurable targets to manage our own carbon emissions whilst also working to influence suppliers, customers, and communities alike to ensure support of the right talent is available to deliver the low carbon transition.
SThree’s current targets are:
•To double the size of our renewable energy business by 2024, which has already grown 46% since the target was set in 2019
•To reduce our emissions by 20% by 2024 (2019 baseline year). This target is aligned with climate science and is part of our journey to net zero. We are currently working with the Science Based Target Initiative to set a validated net zero target and roadmap
Our current carbon reduction actions include:
•Procuring 100% renewable energy across our portfolio
•Reducing our business travel by at least 30% and prioritising low carbon travel
•Removing single use plastics from our supply chain
•Prioritising suppliers who share our values and ambitions, including reducing their carbon emissions and managing their environmental impact
SThree is also a carbon neutral business, as we offset our absolute carbon footprint each year through VCS carbon credit projects.
Our credentials include:
•Carbon Disclosure Project – ‘B’ score
•Early adoption of the Taskforce for Climate-Related Financial Disclosure
•Ranked 69th in the FT Climate Leader Listing for carbon reduction action between 2014-2019
• “Sustainable Recruitment Agency of the Year” – Recruiter awards 2020
Covid-19 recovery

Covid-19 recovery

SThree’s STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) sector focus enabled the company to provide critical support last year, when customers needed life scientists and technologists to develop vaccines, and engineers to build factories to produce those vaccines. SThree Project Services and Solutions rapidly deployed project teams to support NHS trusts transform critical data reporting capability, scale-up internal PMO capacity to manage portfolio growth to support transformation, infrastructure deployments to enable remote working and moved many projects off-site to provide much needed business continuity.

SThree’s initiatives to support recovery from the pandemic also include:
• #STEMSeries virtual events designed to help support STEM professionals through the uncertainty of Covid-19. These sessions cover everything from practical guides on virtual processes to roundtable discussions on what the future will look like. More than 5,300 people signed up to these events last year
• Global research based on feedback from over 1,500 clients, consultants and industry exerts worldwide uncovered how the pandemic is impacting STEM skills demand. This continues to inform how we partner with our stakeholders, including clients, consultants, and local communities
• Supporting underserved communities who are further marginalised due to the pandemic through two community programmes:
 Career Support programmes through education and non-profit partners, to support those at risk of unemployment and underemployment through the delivery of employability interventions. Last year, SThree supported 4,210 people through this programme
 SThree develops STEM Communities to support those who experience barriers to enter and progress in STEM careers. We develop programmes with clients and community partners to help people overcome barriers through education, mentoring and industry insights.
Tackling economic inequality

Tackling economic inequality

SThree responds to the critical need for skills to face challenges of climate emergency, natural resource scarcity, inequality, urbanisation, health care needs, breakthroughs in life sciences, artificial intelligence, energy storage and quantum computing. Without access to STEM skills, businesses will be unable to grow, build resilience and support the low carbon transition.
SThree contributes to economic growth by delivering employment opportunities and empowering business growth. The company positively impacted 33,150 lives last year, through delivering talent resourcing/project solutions and community programmes.
Through its CSR/ESG programme, SThree’s goal is to positively impact 150,000 lives by 2024. In 2021, the company made significant progress towards this target by:
Supplying more than 22,000 people with sustainable, well-paid employment. This includes the managed provision of more than 750 consultants with NHS customers, including technology, PMO and Change specialists working on digital transformation programmes for clients such as West Suffolk CCG, Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, and Northwest London CSU.
Innovation is a constant and we continually invest in our supply chain to create a diverse, disruptive, and collaborative approach toward our service delivery. We leverage our network of trusted suppliers to ensure we are abreast and supportive of new businesses, entrepreneurs, start-ups, and SME’s that we can incorporate in order to meet the most economical and future proofed solutions. This model and our reach across our vast talent base gives us the agility and flexibility that we can pass onto our customers to assure the best value outcomes. Service excellence, service innovation, together with contract flexibility is a key reason we are a trusted and validated option for our customers. We also ensure with any supplier we utilise that we thoroughly identify and manage any cyber security risks with our rigid protocols and processes of NDA’s, MSA’s and Associate on-boarding contractual obligations.
Equal opportunity

Equal opportunity

“Building an inclusive workforce for the future” is a core objective of SThree’s CSR programme – a goal which we will achieve by delivering inclusive staffing solutions, cultivating diverse talent communities, and delivering outcome-led community programmes that help people from underserved communities to access STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) career paths.
We understand the current and growing skills gap in STEM. We also understand that the STEM industries we partner with need to become more accessible and diverse to thrive. And we understand education and employment inequality is only being exacerbated by the health crisis. In response, we launched our first STEM Career Pathways programme in 2020. Through the programme we bring education and training providers together with our clients and talent communities, to empower a diverse talent pipeline. We have mobilised our talent communities to act as mentors to these students, our own colleagues to act as career coaches, and our clients to provide employment opportunities.
We work with a range of community organisations to deliver interventions that support people into employment, including employability workshops, mentoring, internships, and career coaching. Our programmes are designed to deliver positive employment outcomes for specific demographics. We currently deliver programmes targeting race, gender, and socio-economic disparity. As an equal Opportunities Employer, we do not discriminate against staff, clients, or customers on the basis of their gender, sexual orientation, marital or civic partner status, gender assignment, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, disability, or age. The principles of non-discrimination and equality also apply to the way in which staff treat visitors, clients, customers, and suppliers. We further ensure that appropriate supplier checks based around such principals. governance and financial standing are always undertaken and considers these adequate to protect against slavery and human trafficking within the Group’s supply chain.
Wellbeing

Wellbeing

Our people vision is to create an environment that enables our colleagues to be at their best. We do this by building a truly inclusive culture to drive diversity, collaboration, and engagement, where people can flourish as individuals and as part of the team. As the Covid pandemic impacted all of us, protecting and caring for our people was our priority.
We provided support primarily through our ‘THRIVE’ programme, designed to ensure the wellbeing of our colleagues both at work and at home. Working in consultation with our people, THRIVE has been developed to provide support and resources in four areas of wellbeing: body and mind, self-purpose, personal growth, and financial stability. The THRIVE programme provides staff with access to local support helplines, useful apps and online information and resources for personal and confidential use.
SThree provides additional support to all staff through the company’s Employee Assistance Programme and access to HR Business Partners in every office.
We also strengthened our focus on the health and wellbeing of our people by, for example:
• Increasing leave for paid caregivers to support those with caring responsibilities
• Implementing remote working with Health & Safety assessments
• Implementing D&I focus groups to understand the lived experiences of colleagues on our four pillars of D&I (age, race and ethnicity, nationality, and gender) and to centre the strategy on the voice of our people
• Providing training to people managers on how to support remote teams.
