Onboarding and offboarding

Getting started
"Initial end user training is included in the Alation Right Start professional services engagement upon project kickoff/initiation, which is ample for most of our customers to get proficient in the catalog right away. However, additional training is available, including self-paced learning via our Alation University portal (which is included for Alation customers at no additional cost). Alation customers have access to our Product Documentation/User manuals, API Developer Portal, Ideas Hub and Alation university resources which are maintained and updated on a regular basis. Please see resource links below:

Alation Help Center - https://help.alation.com/s/
Alation Product and User Documentation - https://docs2.alationdata.com/en/latest/index.html
Ideas Hub - https://ideas.alation.com/
Alation University - https://learn.alation.com/

We also have a very active online Community, where other users and customers share knowledge and best practices.

Lastly, paid instructor-led training organised by user role is also available via our Expert Services team."

End-of-contract data extraction
"Upon service termination, Alation provides the customer with the ability to export their data prior to deactivation. Customers can retrieve all metadata and configuration stored within the Alation platform through standard export tools or APIs in commonly supported formats.

After confirmation of successful data extraction, Alation initiates secure data deletion from the hosted environment. All customer data — including backups — is permanently and irreversibly deleted within a defined retention period, typically within 30 days of contract termination, following NIST 800-88–compliant data sanitization procedures.

These processes ensure customers retain full control of their information while guaranteeing that no residual data remains in Alation’s systems post-termination."

At the end of cloud service, the bespoke AWS server used to host customer’s Alation catalog will be decommissioned, meaning that all services will be terminated, and EBS and S3 volumes deleted."

"Alation Cloud Service stores customer-uploaded files in tenant-scoped AWS S3 buckets encrypted with AES-256. Encryption is applied at both the S3 disk layer and the application layer using tenant-dedicated AWS KMS keys, with automatic rotation and optional Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) for Enterprise tiers.

All data transfers use HTTPS over TLS 1.3 (TLS 1.2 fallback), including mutual TLS for the Alation Agent. AWS PrivateLink can be enabled to avoid public internet traffic. File-system connectors ingest directly from encrypted cloud object stores. Alation does not expose native SFTP; secure gateways may stage files into S3 without breaking encryption."

Availability and resilience

Guaranteed availability
"Alation Cloud Service (ACS) SLA is 99.5%.
Alation will use commercially reasonable efforts to make the Alation Cloud available with a target uptime of 99.5% during each calendar month for all production environments that have been paid for (""Target Availability""). The Target Availability will be calculated as follows:

(x-y-z) / (x-z) x 100
x = total number of minutes in a calendar month
y = downtime that is not excluded in minutes
z = exclusions from target availability in minutes

Alation's support SLAs can be found published on our website, https://www.alation.com/support/ ."
Approach to resilience
"Alation provides High Availability (HA) infrastructure to ensure platform resilience. HA is configured in a passive setup, with synchronization occurring every five minutes between the active and passive machines. In the event of a failover, customers activate the passive machine and route network traffic to it according to their organisation’s network configuration, providing a seamless user experience. At most, there may be a five-minute loss of catalog updates, and all scheduled jobs continue to run on the newly active machine. An HA service supports automatic rollover when the primary instance becomes unavailable.

For Alation Cloud Service (ACS), Alation offers a 99.5% uptime Service Level Agreement (SLA). Alation uses commercially reasonable efforts to maintain this target availability for all paid production environments each calendar month. Target availability is calculated as:

(x − y − z) / (x − z) × 100

where x is the total minutes in a calendar month, y is non-excluded downtime, and z represents excluded minutes.

Alation has consistently exceeded the 99.5% SLA over the past 12 months. Additionally, 99% of ACS customers have experienced 99.9% or higher uptime in the last 90 days."
