End-of-contract data extraction
Noggin allows for the manual or automated export of data in CSV format, which is suitable for Excel. Data can also be fetched in real time using Noggin's API. For customers that operate a Data Warehouse, Noggin offers an additional cost Data Warehouse add-on that provides a continual export of all Noggin data to the data warehouse. These options mean that customers typically have been able to store all system data prior to contract expiry.
End-of-contract process
At the end of the service contract, Noggin will delete the namespace containing the customer data. Noggin would also delete the encryption key used to encrypt the Customer data stored by the platform Noggin can also provide a certificate of destruction if required.

Differences between the mobile and desktop service
Noggin includes a dedicated native mobile application available on iOS and Android platforms, available from their respective app stores. All Noggin features are available from the mobile app, not just a subset. It allows users to receive and respond to push notifications and remotely trigger notifications and associated workflows. The app allows users to:

* Recieve push notification alerts
* Send communications
* Submit photos, video or audio
* Use device GPS to create spatial data

The application presents an interface designed for smaller form factor devices and optimised for touch screens—using design principles familiar to mobile app users.

Accessibility standards
WCAG 2.2 AA
Accessibility testing
The primary end-user interfaces of the Noggin product conform to W3C WCAG 2.1 guidelines. Some interactive visualisations (e.g. GIS), and some administrative sections (e.g. workflow design tools) do not conform due to their complex nature - in particular the navigation by keyboard alone guidelines. Earlier this year Noggin launched a review of accessibility with the aim to enhance overall accessibility.
An updated VPAT is available to provide the status of this work.

WCAG 2.2 AA
API
Yes
What users can and can't do using the API
The REST API offers create (POST), retrieve (GET), update (PUT and PATCH) and delete (DELETE) operations for data objects stored on the platform, along with the ability to search for data objects and upload and download file attachments. The Noggin Connect API allows custom middleware to programmatically interact with the platform using custom middleware built by eithercustomers or Noggin.
The REST API uses bearer token authentication, with customers able to manage API keys (tokens) in the Noggin 2.0 UI. Tokens must be present in each HTTP request to the API in the "Authorization" HTTP header
Noggin 2.0 workflows support a webhook node. These allow Noggin workflows to call an API endpoint on a customer hosted system via a HTTP POST. Webhooks are quite flexible and can be configured to include a JSON body of the data object fields

Scaling

Independence of resources
The Noggin 2.0 platform design is focussed on scalability with architecture to support vertical & horizontal-scalability. 3 scaling tiers can scale-independently. The platform-serves the front-end application (presentation-tier) from-the edge-server of Amazon-CloudFront content delivery-network. These edge-servers are globally-distributed,& serve-the application-resources from server-closest to-the-user. The application-services are micro-services on-the Amazon-Elastic-Container-Service. This-service-scales up/down automatically with demand. New-containers can-help meet-demand then removed-once traffic-returns to lower-levels.The storage-Services tiers-that persist-the-data. The services-used are Amazon-S3, Amazon-DynamoDB, Amazon-ElastiCache and Amazon-Elasticsearch. Amazon manages-the services scalability which scale-automatically with demand. Noggin-platform supports addition of new-user-cases through configuration with-minimal-impact. See Architecture-Whitepaper for more details.

Some of the controls that are implemented by design include the use web application firewall, logging and monitoring, centralized access control, encryption for data at rest, encryption of data in transit, key management, active-active-active architecture, vulnerability management and several others.

Availability and resilience

Guaranteed availability
Targeted availability SLA for Noggin 2.0 platform core services is 99.99%, and non-core services is 99.9%
Approach to resilience
Noggin makes use of AWS services and high available to handle disasters. The platform runs in active-active-active mode across three AWS Availability Zones (logical data centers). The loss of a Availability Zone would mean the other Availability Zones pick up and scale to handle the extra traffic. Both RTO and RPO targets are 5 minutes.
Outage reporting

Identity and authentication

User authentication needed
Yes
User authentication
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
  • Username or password
Access restrictions in management interfaces and support channels
Noggin offers direct-platform authentication or SAML Single-Sign-On, and recommends Single-Sign-On where available. Noggin supports SSO-authentication by an external-identity-provider through SAML 2.0 where Noggin is a Service-Provider and defers-authentication to the Identity-Provider. This allows for the full-feature set of authentication-technologies to-be-used, including multi-factor-authentication and complex-business rules for password-entropy-etc. Noggin local-accounts support MFA for Noggin platform-passwords, but typically does-not have the features-and-options available in a dedicated-authentication-platform. Noggin supports TOTP and SMS-MFA for platform-passwords. MFA-rules for direct-login are based on Profiles or IP-address-ranges.
For MFA it should usually be brokered via SSO-system, if possible. Once authenticated, authorisation-is-performed in Noggin using Noggin's role-based access-control-mechanism.

Configuration and change management approach
Noggin uses patch automation where possible. Noggin employs AWS Patch Manager, which is part of the AWS Systems Manager service, as well as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to track, manage and automate application of patches to key on-premise and AWS hosts.
At the application level, Noggin 2.0 container images are rebuilt using the the latest patches available as part of the CI/CD workflow automatically. Noggin generally releases weekly, but can use a hotfix process if necessary.
Vulnerability management type
Complies with a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v4.0 or SSAE-18 / ISAE 3402
Vulnerability management approach
Vulnerability management covers many facets of the operation of a secure system, including preventative measures to avoid the existence of, exploitability of, or limit the impact of individual vulnerabilities. Noggin maintains security and compliance by scanning all the underlying EC2 instances against patch, configuration and other policies. The Vulnerability Management Plan also includes:
* CVEs or vendor advisories for common software products used in Noggin 2.0
* Periodic review of application source code as part of normal peer review, or for any other reason
* Procedures for handling incidents such as the discovery of a system intrusion
Protective monitoring type
Complies with a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v4.0 or SSAE-18 / ISAE 3402
Protective monitoring approach
The Noggin 2.0 Platform vulnerability management plan includes controls at the application-level and the infrastructure-level. The application-vulnerability management includes secure-coding practices, peer-review of all code-changes, automated tests, source-code dependency vulnerability-scans us, NPM audit (for all packages used in the code)and QA-tests. The Infrastructure level vulnerability-assessment includes network-level design(component isolation), defence in-depth controls, endpoint security-platform, patch-management-tools, Security-analysis-tools and monitoring of security-advisories. The vulnerability-management-plan also includes annual-penetration-tests by third-party. This enables Noggin to conduct multi-layers vulnerability-assessment in a regular-manner.
The platform makes use of AWS Guard-Duty for intrusion detection(https://aws.amazon.com/guardduty/). In the case of breach, Noggin policy is to-notify affected customers without undue-delay
