Fighting climate change
TJC is committed to fighting climate change as a company and through our work. We have a net zero plan and purchase carbon offsetting annually. We have a culture of sustainability embedded in everything we do; we are a paperless organisation, make use of the best technologies to facilitate remote working and keep travel to a minimum.
Our culture of sustainability is felt by our customers when we deliver our work. When we begin a contract, we develop an environmental plan to explore with customers how we might generate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions as an additional benefit of professional services. These plans include benchmarking emissions so that we can measure progress.
We offer advice to customers on how to make the best of remote working and showcase the benefits of other sustainable practises such as being paperless. By doing this we hope to influence our customers to adopt similar practises.
Where we use subcontractors, we demand high environmental standards including carbon offset, net zero plans and practical efforts to achieve sustainable working.
We are always on the lookout for new ways to improve our performance in this area and customers and subcontractors are a great source off development in this area. Because we are at the heart of an ecosystem of companies, we are well placed to share best practise.Covid-19 recovery
TJC is committed to supporting its employees and its supply chain to recover from COVID 19. We have created a flexible working environment for our staff and partners ensuring that those vulnerable colleagues are still able to play a full role in the life of the company and our projects. We provide all our staff with a supply of COVID-19 tests to ensure that we can continue our activities online and in person with confidence. We have clear guidance around precautions should tests be positive.
We work with customers and partners to ensure that, where appropriate their staff, can benefit from similar flexibility.
We recognise the impacts that COVID-19 has had in the area local to our office in Hackney. This area suffered from high inequality and poor health outcomes before the COVID-19 pandemic occurred and we recognise the need to support local businesses, particularly hospitality businesses, in the area by ‘buying local’. This means that when we hold team meetings or socials, or we host clients we do so using catering from within a few 100 metres of our office.Tackling economic inequality
Tackling economic inequality is baked in to TJC's business model. We are expert at supporting SME and start-ups access opportunities, solve problems and grow. Our methodology for all our work is about activating a diverse ecosystem of small, entrepreneurial and innovative companies allowing them to work with government in ways they would not normally be able to. Our work leading the Home Office's Accelerated Capability Environment is an exemplar of this - We have developed a network of over 300 companies that have delivered over £50m of innovation to the government.
The companies we support are in high growth, innovative, technology sectors such as data science and AI. We support them to find the best people including advising them on creating environments where neurodiverse people can find work and thrive using our own in-house experts. We offer our own paid internships and actively seek neurodiverse applicants.
By looking to develop solutions to complex challenges through collaboration with our ecosystem of innovative partners we create a diverse and resilient supply chain that challenges old fashioned market dominance and approaches issues in new ways. We support our ecosystem partners to build their resilience by demanding high standards on security, in particular cybersecurity. We support all ecosystem partners to achieve cyber essentials plus accreditation.Equal opportunity
At the core of TJC’s culture is the value it places on people and innovation – this feeds through to our work – we deliver differently.
These values inform how we build our teams – we value diversity of experience and see different ways of thinking and approaching problems as key strengths. This means that fostering an environment that creates opportunities for different kinds of people is core to our mission success. This is true throughout our supply chain and shapes the business environment in which we operate.
We have proactivity created a culture that is open and inviting to people who might face barriers to participating with other employers. For example, TJC’s approach to flexible working and maternity leave ensure that disabled colleagues can be a core part of a successful team and meet their individual needs. Where we subcontract, we demand similar policies from our partners.
Beyond that we actively seek neurodiversity in our teams recognising the unique contribution that can be made by people who see the world differently. We do this through our programme of internships targeted at neurodiverse students. We ensure that they can thrive in the TJC environment with help from our world leading in house experts of cognitive neuroscience.
We have several well-developed training pathways to support disadvantaged people thrive in TJC and our supply chain and to train managers how best to support others in the company.
We closely monitor pay and progression against protected characteristics to ensure that our interventions are effective to maintain our focus on equality. We follow best practice to fight modern slavery throughout our supply chain.
Through these actions we seek to be an exemplar of business success by tackling inequality in the workplace not as an extra, but as a core part of our value proposition.Wellbeing
At the core of TJC’s culture is the value it places on people and innovation – the wellbeing of the people within TJC, our customers, supply chain and community is a priority in how we develop and deliver our work.
The TJC team is diverse, with a broad range of experience and needs. We understand how wellbeing and community cohesion are key components to both our methodology and the outcomes of our work.
TJC staff are involved in decisions about the company, they have agency about how we approach key issues and as a company we understand how our actions impact wellbeing. The company values our staff’s views and takes actions to address issues both within our own workforce and the supply chain. For example, when the decision to go paperless was implemented we rolled out iPads to allow those who still wanted to take notes with a pen to feel confident in their work. We have made the mental health at work commitment and commend it to our customers and partners.
We are at the heart of an ecosystem of small, innovative companies. Within this community we are an exemplar of what it takes to deliver a healthy workforce and we share best practise with our partners. We routinely provide specialist office equipment to our employees' homes so that they are able to work safely and enjoy the well-being benefits of flexible working. When we sub-contract we demand that our partners take similar steps.
Many of our team have backgrounds in tackling extremism and have a deep understanding of community cohesion issues. We take care to understand the environment in which we work and seek to co-design programmes with our community where appropriate. As a company we support our teams to volunteer in their communities and become community leaders.
