Planning

Planning service
Yes
How the planning service works
CDG works in a structured way to explore and understand pain points of the current platforms and strategic thinking for cloud services in the future. The objective is to capture in detail what the current service(s) are, the underpinning hardware, software and networking elements, service strengths and known issues. Further, it considers what cloud business benefits are being sought, what other service constraints exist and seeks to identify (if appropriate) any tactical fixes that might be needed in the immediate term. The output of this stage is a ‘to-be’ cloud service definition outlining the proposed solution and deployment plan. This may include an early proof of concept or pilot phase if considered appropriate.

How the quality assurance and performance testing works
CDG support, promote and comply with government and industry best practice for service and information assurance so as to ensure the delivery of a quality service. This may include, but is not limited to:

• Prince2 - government’s project management method
• TOGAF (the Open Group Architecture Framework) - an industry-standard architectural framework - a detailed method and a set of supporting tools for developing a broad range of of different ICT architectures to enable business requirements to be met by IT systems
• Microsoft Project - the widely used project planning/management software
• ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) - used as best practice guidance for consultancy assignments on service delivery improvement
• CESG
• PSN and SWAN codes of connection.

CDG’s engagements are typically for organisations such as Scottish Central Government where adherence to standards such as ISO 27001 certification, CESG guidance, network codes of connection and Government Security Classification (GSC) is essential. Our designs and implementations are regularly penetration tested and subjected to CHECK reviews.

How the support service works
CDG offers a diverse range of support services, anything from conducting a post deployment review to offering on-going advice, guidance or long term support. For example, CDG can scope and implement appropriate data backup, restore and disaster recovery service options. In most instances there is first a need to understand client requirements before customising a service to best meet specific needs and conditions. This is done in full consultation with the client and pricing is subject to the same CDG SFIA Rate Card.

Service scope

Service constraints
Service constraints vary from client to client and are dependent on a number of factors pertinent to their environment and priorities. CDG recommends early engagement to identify what these are (if any). Any service constraints identified are captured and clearly documented within the Statement of Service that is jointly agreed between the client and CDG prior to any contract award.

Fighting climate change

CDG is committed to fighting climate change and seeks to influence staff, suppliers, customers and communities to support environmental protection and improvement. We encourage the minimising of waste by not printing emails and draft documents, recycling where possible and use of recycling bins. We support reducing travel by working from home where possible and the use of technology such as video conferencing to connect with colleagues and customers. We choose environmentally conscious partners by actively reviewing their environmental credentials and use local businesses when appropriate. Not only does this help support the local economy but it also reduces the carbon footprint. We seek to save energy by careful use of technology and appliances with active power management. We use the cloud for energy efficiency and resource efficiency saving space and providing flexibility as well as cutting back on hardware and manufacturing, plus the emissions that go along with both.

Covid-19 recovery

CDG is supporting organisations to manage and recover from the impacts of COVID-19. We deliver technological innovation enabling employees to work from home and support those affected or shielding. Such measures minimise the spread of the disease and reduce demand on health and care services. For example, CDG assisted in the transition of what was previously some 800 remote working staff to a population of over 12,000 staff within the first 2 weeks of the first lockdown announcement on the 23 March 2020. We can also transition services on-line such that fewer people need to travel and sustainable travel solutions realised. For example, CDG helped migrate the Skype for Business service from an on-premise solution to the cloud-based MS Teams collaboration platform. This removed the bottleneck for remote user access that restricted collaboration to voice only calls, and provided full video conferencing for all users from home. We can also assist customers responding to changes in the supply chain where impact of events like lockdowns and border closures disrupt supply chains and introduce delays to shipping. We deliver innovative approaches offering alternative routes to market and/or alternative solutions. For example, at Scottish Government CDG found alternative supply chain routes for the sourcing of VPN concentrators enabling delivery of a remote working solution to over 12,000 staff within the required deadline of 2 weeks and without disruption to business as usual. We also support mental health through the design, implementation and support of solutions that enable more autonomy, greater flexibility, less commuting time and better work-life balance. For organisations, this means increased motivation, higher productivity, reduced staff turnover and reduced need for office space.

Tackling economic inequality

CDG, as a Micro SME, is limited in its ability to tackle the economic inequality social value theme outlined in PPN 06/20. For example, as a small business, it is hard for us to tackle employment in deprived areas and address skills shortages in high growth areas at a macro level. We would be delighted to explore ways in which we could work with larger organisations to help them achieve such policy outcomes by offering innovative thought leadership and supporting technology.

Equal opportunity

CDG is committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion among its workforce. The aim is for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. In providing our services we are also committed to the same for customers, suppliers and others within our communities.
Our policy is to provide equality, fairness and respect for all in our employment, whether temporary, part-time or full-time. In doing so we do not discriminate because of the characteristics of age; disability; gender reassignment; marriage or civil partnership; pregnancy and maternity; race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin); religion or belief; sex and sexual orientation.
All staff are helped and encouraged to develop their full potential, so their talents and resources can be fully utilised to the benefit of the business, our customers and the wider community.
We oppose and avoid all forms of discrimination. This includes in pay and benefits; terms and conditions of employment; dealing with grievances and discipline; dismissal; redundancy; leave for parents; requests for flexible working and selection for employment, promotion, training or other development opportunities
We encourage equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace as they are good practice and make business sense. This enables a working environment free of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination, promoting dignity and respect for all, and where individual differences and the contributions of all staff are recognised and valued.
We take seriously complaints of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination by fellow employees, customers, suppliers, visitors, the public and any others in the course of the organisation's work activities. Such acts will be dealt with and appropriate action will be taken.

Wellbeing

CDG supports the wellbeing of all employees. We recognise that work has an impact on the mental and physical health of staff and we look to make that a positive experience.
Effective employee wellbeing is achieved at CDG by encouraging employees to seek work-life balance and considering requests for career breaks and sabbaticals. We encourage employee fitness, promote dignity at work and seek to minimising the stressful impacts of work.
