Planning

Planning service
Yes
How the planning service works
We work collaboratively with our clients from first interaction and ongoing to build a plan that will achieve success.

Prior to project engagement we run Discovery Workshop to build a shared understanding of the business, product and engagement goals, understand/mitigate risks, identify integrations, and gather enough context to build a proposal.

Product development starts with kick-off and, if uncertainty exists, a Discovery and Framing phase to establish alignment and ideal, evidence-based starting point.

During Discovery the product team gains first-hand understanding of the problem-space, prioritising top-problems, identifying business-needs and technical-constraints.

In Framing, the team prioritises top solutions to provide confidence in product direction before committing to code, reducing risk.

This process involves research-led, full-stack user-centred design and Lean-startup practices such as ethnographic research, market analysis, experiments, service blueprints, impact-mapping and prioritisation exercises. We use technical investigations to establish an armature that validates architecture and path to production.

To minimise risk further, we adopt a dual-track agile process, continuing to engage with end users through user-centred design techniques, and refining products and prototypes throughout the product development process. Continuous user-research ensures a valuable, validated, product. Releasing early/often ensures fast-feedback, real-world measurement and helps to minimise risk from product or business misalignment.

Training

Training service provided
Yes
How the training service works
We provide immersive, best practice focussed enablement, that equips developers and architects with the skills to develop new applications, move applications (replatforming), and modernise existing applications on Tanzu. Our services are designed to enable through "doing it" rather than "talking about it".

Training includes:
- New Application Development - Build cloud-native applications, learning how to build a single application, then evolving the application to cloud native on Tanzu. It covers setting up CI/CD, Application Architecture, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud Services.

- Develop new and migrate existing applications through the comprehensive, hands-on engagements to review application architectures, and recommend prioritised opportunities for refactoring. Learn the fundamentals of Tanzu, CI/CD, Application Architecture, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud Services.

- Gain hands-on familiarity with the principles and products that will allow you to run Tanzu at scale. Learn the concepts of platform as a product, site reliability engineering and more. Become prepared for you to join a Platform Governance enablement engagement or join a team that has already completed one. Trainees will learn about Concourse, BOSH, Credhub, Tanzu, and Platform Automation.

Setup and migration

Setup or migration service available
Yes
How the setup or migration service works
Where a VMware Tanzu Labs application development engagement involves the re-building or modernising software for the purpose of moving it to the Cloud, the VMware Tanzu Labs team will employ specific tools and practices to re-develop or modernise the software to be cloud-native and portable.

This process includes, but is not limited to:
- Discovery and Framing to develop understanding of the problems to be solved and align on how to start solving them. This includes primary research and observation of business, user and technical aspects of the domain.

- Event storming - to provide a holistic understanding of the application’s bounded contexts and help the team to better understand the best way to build abstractions and microservices.

- Visualisation and architecture design - to construct an Interaction Diagram to visualise API, Event and Data Flows through the application (known as a Boris diagram) and identify a thin slice of functionality to begin the modernisation, based on business priorities, technical complexity and entanglement.

- Iterative delivery - to deliver value early and rapidly optimise product direction via a continuous feedback loop.

Quality assurance and performance testing

Quality assurance and performance testing service
Yes
How the quality assurance and performance testing works
Our approach to software development ensures that we bake quality and testing into all phases in the development of software, from the first code written through to production.

To maintain the highest possible quality whilst minimising defects we practise Test Driven Development, Pair Programming and Continuous Integration. Writing tests before the code ensures both the test and code are correct. Pair programming ensures we continuously peer-review every decision as well as every line of code. We use Continuous Integration to automatically validate that all tests and behaviour are maintained as changes are introduced to the software.

We automate all appropriate testing types including unit, integration, behaviour, system, smoke, contract, regression and performance tests.

We practise the 12-factor methodology to maximise quality, stability, scalability and performance of the software.

Stories (units of change) are kept small, and are continuously accepted by the Product Owner who wrote them. This provides assurance that all behaviour introduced matches the original intention.

We practise DevSecOps methodologies of automation to stabilise the software release process. CI maintains software quality. Pipelines and automation manage complexity/minimise human error. Tanzu ensures consistency of environments between testing/production. We provide a high quality environment including automatic healing, scaling and credential rotation.

Fighting climate change

Fighting climate change

Sustainable growth for VMware’s business requires decoupling our company growth from carbon emissions. To this end, we’ve accelerated our focus on decarbonization and received third-party validation from the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) on our science-based targets. Since 2018, we have maintained our certified CarbonNeutral® company status, in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol. Since 2019, we have sourced 100 percent of our power in our global facilities from renewable sources, in accordance with RE100 Reporting Guidance. ● VMware’s net zero emissions goal builds on approved science-based targets and expands the scope of our climate commitments. For us, a net zero goal means reducing emissions for our entire carbon footprint. We are focused on prioritizing energy efficiency within our operations through our commitment to green buildings, working with our suppliers to reduce their emissions, and supporting distributed workforces through our Future of Work initiative. Through carbon financing, we support low carbon sustainable development projects that enable carbon avoidance to offset our remaining emissions. In line with the leading net zero guidance, we are developing our strategy to include carbon removal projects to address residual emissions. ● In FY22, we furthered climate transition planning at VMware, guided by Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. As VMware continues to learn more about climate risks, we can build longer time horizon risks into our strategy to become even more sustainable and resilient.
Covid-19 recovery

Covid-19 recovery

Decisive action by VMware during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a company-wide remote workforce, which our customers were able to implement as well through VMware’s Workspace solutions. ● Through VMware’s unique Citizen Philanthropy approach to giving, we empower every VMware employee—wherever they are—to be active, engaged citizens, contributing to what matters most to them in their own communities. Throughout the pandemic, VMware people delivered food to neighbors in need, made masks and donated resources to frontline workers and relief efforts, and helped nonprofit organizations strengthen their IT operations so they can focus on supporting their communities. VMware also supported GlobalGiving’s Coronavirus Relief Fund and TechSoup’s COVID-19 Response Fund, and raised the limit on matching gifts available to all VMware people.

Equal opportunity

Equal opportunity

VMware joined the Valuable 500, a global business collective that is igniting systemic change and unlocking the business, social and economic value of more than 1 billion people with disabilities around the world. From ensuring the technology we develop is accessible for all to empowering our employees through accessible, inclusive and innovative engagement and wellbeing programs, our company remains committed to driving meaningful impact on disability, wellness and neurodiversity inclusion. ● As a leading software company, user accessibility is top of mind at VMware. One of our ESG goals by 2030 is to ensure the technology that we develop, and source within our supply chain, is accessible for all. We created internal Accessibility Guidelines within VMware and committed to assess all new software and events suppliers for accessibility standards aligned with our own guidelines. ● Employee Resource Groups at VMware are called Power of Difference communities (“PODs”), and they play a strategic role in building a culture of belonging. We are focused on driving a culture that is inclusive of all forms of diversity, including supporting employees with disabilities. In 2021, VMware was named a Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion by the Disability Equality Index (DEI).
