Fighting climate change
Occam Group have several initiatives that support fighting climate change, with short and long-term goals documented in our Environmental, Social and Governance Strategy. This includes our Cycle to Work Scheme which is utilised to reduce car usage. We are committed to carbon offsetting via monthly contributions to Ecologi, who are a social enterprise who primarily undertake carbon offsetting on behalf of Occam Group via planting trees and funding renewable energy projects. Whilst this does not tackle the root causes of climate change, it is the most established option available to the company to contribute to reducing climate change. We also have an Environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility policy that states our commitment to comply with all environmental legislation and to prevent environmental impacts as a result of our actions. This includes promoting efficient energy consumption, minimising waste through recycling and reuse, and encouraging environmental travel (e.g. using public transport and car sharing where possible).Covid-19 recovery
Occam Group seeks to support people affected by COVID-19 by creating both senior and entry level employment opportunities. All employees are encouraged to and are supported in developing their skills.
We particularly recognise the impact of COVID-19 on young people. A key principle underpinning our growth is creating opportunities for graduates to join the business and thrive. Junior staff are supported with their journey to chartership through their monthly one-to-one meeting with their line managers. Professional body subscriptions and chartership applications are paid for by the business. Junior staff have been given management and leadership courses. We encourage staff to attend relevant events in order to develop their knowledge.
As an elected Affiliate Organisation to the Safety and Reliability (SaRS) Society, Occam Group is recognised as a leader in the field of safety advice, having demonstrated our commitment to safety best practice by supporting the work of SaRS and partnering with the society to provide employees with first-class professional development opportunities. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is undertaken and tracked in accordance with staff’s professional institution CPD registers. Where staff competency requires enhancing, suitable training is identified, undertaken, recorded and evaluated within our Training Record. Our success in implementing this is also evidenced by having a considerable number of Chartered Engineers, Chartered Environmentalists and Fellows of respective Institutions.Tackling economic inequality
In Occam Group we take pride in our community of professional partners, including SMEs, sole traders, and associates. Our expanding collective professional network promotes innovation, resilience, and opportunity, thorough collaboration with both young and established partners. We regularly collaborate with other local SMEs and have a supply chain of various approved SME organisations and social enterprises. The majority of our outsourced technical work is contracted to other SMEs and Micro-SMEs. We also support local SME businesses for our other business enabling functions, such as our IT support and accountancy. We are signatories to the Prompt Payment Code, and therefore are required to pay suppliers on time, within agreed terms.
Occam Group is a proud partner of the STEMAZING women in engineering outreach programme. Women in STEM participants take part in training and workshops and then deliver a 4-week programme to engage children aged 7 to 9 years old. We have chosen to donate our funded spaces to university students to help remove any cost barriers to this important work. We aim to use our STEMAZING support to help provide employment opportunities to women, who are underrepresented in our engineering field. We are also signatories of the Women in Defence Charter, which aims to improve gender balance in the defence enterprise.Equal opportunity
Occam Group is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion amongst its workforce and will ensure that any form of unlawful discrimination is eliminated from the company and its associates. We aim to include a fair and true representation from all sections of society in our workforce/associates and put suitable support in place to enable each of these company affiliates to feel respected and able to perform to their full potential. As a company we promote an inclusive and diverse environment. building relationships is one of our core values. We firmly believe in putting people first, whether that is looking after our staff and customers, or seeking to make a positive impact on society through our business. We are an equal opportunities employer, and are proud to welcome applicants from all backgrounds, demographics and abilities. Our commitment to inclusion, diversity and well-being of our staff is stated in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy. The Policy ensures that we do not unlawfully discriminate against the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics of: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin), religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. It also underpins our commitment to the Race at Work Charter, of which we are a signatory. Occam Group has also signed the Armed Covenant, the key principles of which include supporting the employment of service leavers, reservists, veterans, and service spouses by providing tailored on the job training and a specified career path. We attend service leaver career events and encourage employment opportunities for services leavers who are pursuing a career in engineering assurance.Wellbeing
Occam Group cares about the wellbeing of its employees and people we do business with. Internally, we champion the wellbeing of our staff through a variety of mechanisms including:
- A clearly defined roles and expectations structure, which is bolstered by a periodic review schedule. This helps support a sustainable work-life balance, and ensures employees are recognised for additional effort to support the business.
