Operational security

Configuration and change management standard
Supplier-defined controls
Configuration and change management approach
A formal Change Management Process governs modifications to the service, including approval by multiple technical and business parties and a security review. Additionally, Azure has developed formal standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing the change management process which cover software development, hardware change and release management, and are consistent with established regulatory guidelines including ISO 27001, SOC 1 / SOC 2, NIST 800-53, and others.
Microsoft also uses Operational Security Assurance (OSA), a framework that incorporates knowledge gained through capabilities that are unique to Microsoft including the Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle (SDL), and the Microsoft Security Response Center program.
Vulnerability management type
Supplier-defined controls
Vulnerability management approach
Platform components hosted on Azure receive regular and automated security updates. We monitor industry security feeds, including GitHub Security Alerts, to identify any potential vulnerabilities in third party dependencies. Patches to known security vulnerabilities reserve immediate top priority as part of our software development process, and are released subject to our agreed SLAs.
Protective monitoring type
Supplier-defined controls
Protective monitoring approach
We use both Azure's industry-leading security monitoring and our own defined processes to monitor for application and data compromises. Security incidents reserve immediate top priority as part of our operational processes, and are mitigated as soon as possible, subject to our agreed SLAs.
Incident management type
Supplier-defined controls
Incident management approach
We follow the 5-step incident response process used by Microsoft Azure; Detect, Assess, Diagnose, Stabilise and Close. Users are able to report incidents through our standard support structure, ensuring a clear and robust pathway for all incidents. Our policy is to notify customers of impacting or potentially impacting issues as early as possible via direct communication and maintain a dialogue as information becomes available through to resolution. Once resolved we perform a post-mortem, which would also be shared with affected customers.
