Fighting climate change

Helsing is committed to being carbon neutral and has implemented a process to identify and target our largest sources of carbon emission for its business activities:

Business travel: Helsing ensures that staff, suppliers, and customers alike only travel when needed and by the most sustainable means available. When travelling to external meetings, we aim to incentivise team members to use trains. Where car is the only option, we aim to ensure at least two passengers share. As part of our internal governance process, we engage with a carbon offset programme to ensure the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated with respect to the programmes we deliver against. We also provide a Cycle to Work Salary Sacrifice scheme to all UK employees to enable them to travel without the use of carbon emitting vehicles.

Computational activity: Helsing’s software requires compute resource to process large amounts of data for customers. To reduce the carbon impact of this, we use cloud computing wherever possible – it is more energy efficient, reduces impact on unused hardware, and reduces manufacturing demand reliant on rare earth elements. By default, we prioritise working with major cloud providers that have committed to powering their data centres exclusively with renewable energy by 2030.

Sustainable clothing. Helsing exclusively uses clothing for employees from Stanley Stella, a company that specialises in environmentally friendly and sustainable clothing, with a particular focus on water minimisation during the production of their organic cotton.

We continue to implement green initiatives at our offices, such as the introduction of various plants and pollinators, use of filtered drinking water taps to deter the use of plastic bottles, and prioritisation of locally sourced food for any in-house catering. We have also established a comprehensive recycling system, which forms part of the onboarding process for all employees and contractors.

Covid-19 recovery

As a diverse business attracting a broad range of talent from those recently graduated to experienced veterans, Helsing recognises that the Covid-19 epidemic affected our employees in a multitude of ways, both positive and negative. We remain resolute in our approach to our employee’s health and wellbeing, and have adapted our business model to address the need to cater to flexible working conditions, safe and sustainable travel arrangements, and clean office environments for all.

Tackling economic inequality

As a rapidly-growing start-up SME, Helsing understands – and actively advocates for – the important role that start-ups, SMEs and VCSEs play in tackling economic inequality in the defence and technology sectors. Helsing is investing substantial private venture capital in the UK to specifically develop and nurture the AI software and technology industry in Europe, with London as its centre of AI technical expertise. This is already creating high skilled, new jobs to establish the UK as a world leader in AI software and technology for the defence sector, with the express aim of tapping into and fostering the emerging UK AI software and technology talent.

As part of our commitment to diversify the workplace, we have signed up to the Women in Defence Charter, with an aim to grow our non-male workforce to 30% by 2030. With a particular focus on female engineers, we have sought to further encourage and support education in STEM through our involvement in the RUST community and the ada Fellowship, for which we confirmed our first female sponsorship earlier this year. To ensure our existing workforce are also educated on the importance of diversity, we provide all staff with Unconscious Bias training. This is in addition to an individual yearly learning allowance which employees may spend on training and skill-building relevant to their professional development.

Helsing is also a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, and within only two years has been granted the Silver Award. Helsing has multiple active UK Military Reservists, several of which are programme leads on priority defence contracts and provides annual paid leave to support Reserve service. It’s important for us to recognise the needs of our existing and future workforce and ensure our business practices and employment benefits are continually reviewed and adjusted to reflect their needs.

Equal opportunity

Helsing operates at the intersection of defence and technology – both sectors that have been historically disproportionately white and male. Therefore, we are very sensitive that, in order to have a diverse workforce and supplier base, we must think outside-the-box and focus on intrinsic skills over industry experience.

Our analysis shows that referrals are the most successful recruitment channel for diverse (non-male, non-white, and disabled) colleagues. As such, we promote and monitor referrals, offering higher referral bonuses to colleagues that refer diverse candidates. We are a signatory to the Women in Defence Charter, with an immediate aim to achieve a 30% female workforce by 2030.

In our recruitment process, we keep track of the pass-through rates of candidates with and without protected characteristics to monitor and minimise bias, offering modifications to the interview process where appropriate (i.e., for neuro-diverse candidates). We offer mentoring to all colleagues and monitor employee and supplier retention rates to be able to identify any cultural issues quickly. To help further our efforts, Helsing has dedicated ERGs for Women, LGBTQ+, Race, and Neurodiversity to lobby for greater equality and representation in our workforce.

Similarly, Helsing has a dedicated Veterans ERG to lobby for veterans and veteran issues within the company. Helsing is a proud employer of veterans, with 50% of the Programmes and Partnerships team having served as members of the UK Armed Forces. Helsing is a Silver Award holder of the Armed Forces Covenant, and actively supports veteran employees and applicants, through its secondment opportunities supporting the transition from UK Government roles into those within the fast-growing UK technology sector.

Regarding modern slavery, all staff undergo training on what it is and how to identify it. We also require that all our suppliers have made anti-modern slavery commitments before engaging them.

Wellbeing

Helsing is fully committed to supporting the mental and physical health of its employees and actively encourages individuals to pursue a wide range of subsidised activities, either individually or as a group, to suit their lifestyle, routine, and ambitions.

Helsing carries out quarterly employee pulse surveys to keep close to employees wants and needs. In late 2023 we identified, from feedback obtained via the pulse surveys, more optimum means by which Helsing could support its employees’ health and wellbeing. This resulted in the initialisation of a subsidised ClassPass account for all UK employees to access a wide range of classes to best suit their individual needs wherever they are based. Helsing also encourages group social events for such activities, providing means for creating internal communication channels to broaden such connectivity. It is important to give our employees this flexibility to express themselves not just for the benefit of their physical health but equally so in support of their mental health.

We consider the mental health of our employees to be of vital importance primarily with respect to their individual wellbeing, but also in contributing to the success of our company and how they engage with the wider supply chain and customer base around them. Helsing offers every employee ten individual counselling services each year via a third-party provider, as well as a range of face to face and online resources covering specific areas such as bereavement, CBT and legal advice. We have also partnered with an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which is intended to help employees deal with personal problems that might adversely impact their work performance and also for them to keep a constant check on their personal mental health and wellbeing, particularly for those working in the field.
