Fighting climate change

Newton has set ambitious, yet grounded targets to achieve Net Zero by 2027. We track the environmental impact of our projects to help all our clients realise, and maximise, potential environmental improvements. Delivery of our initiatives comes via our internal “N-Vironment” team.

Our team have created a roadmap to achieve Net Zero that has been approved by senior leadership. We have set initiatives that we are undertaking to progress us towards our goal of Net Zero by 2027. Work delivered through G-Cloud 14 will be included within the scope of Newton’s Carbon Reduction Plan.

We use a carbon footprint tool to monitor our commitments as well as for employees to check their individual impact and make pledges. We report our corporate carbon emissions using the Government accredited Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting initiative. Our results are included in our Annual Report at Companies House.

Evidence of our environmental commitment is our ISO14001 environmental management accreditation. We have maintained certification to ISO:14001 since June 2014 (certificate EMS 600118) in recognition of our robust approach to environmental management.

How we will Fight Climate Change
We commit to offsetting 100% of the carbon footprint we generate when providing services procured through G-Cloud 14. We also commit to make sustainable travel and accommodation choices in our operations.

We will utilise energy usage solutions to reduce & optimise client energy consumption. We have done this for several clients to help tackle climate change and optimise their operations.

For each call-off requirement, we work with the procuring client to co-design relevant social value KPIs and then track performance against them. Data could include carbon emissions from travel as well as CO2 that has been offset using the schemes, reported at a call-off requirement level.

Covid-19 recovery

Our work is focused on transforming outcomes. This has required us to help organisations and communities manage and recover from the impacts of the pandemic. Work delivered through G-Cloud 14 would also focus on transforming outcomes, and our impact can be focussed to help covid-19 recovery in a way that is applicable to each client.

Our own working practices have evolved and adapted to the demands of COVID-19. Much of our business switched to fully remote working, with no impact on delivery. Our teams now follow flexible, hybrid working practices tailored to each programme, and staff feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

How we will support Covid-19 Recovery
We continue to help organisations implement new ways of working to meet the ongoing strain. Within Adult Social Care our digital tools better connect older adults with existing community services, such as voluntary organisations, reducing pressure on more formal care.

An example of how the services we can offer under G-Cloud 14 can help continued Covid recovery was our work with the Cabinet Office. At the pandemic’s outset, we worked with Cabinet Office to rapidly implement the government’s Shielding service. We coordinated stakeholders to contact over 2.2 million people and ensure they received ongoing support while Shielding within their local communities. This work created a dashboard solution that helped Cabinet Office to tackle the pandemic. We could provide similarly impactful solutions to clients on the G-Cloud 14 framework.

Social Mobility is a flagship cause for our business. This includes providing training and upskilling opportunities for young people who face barriers to employment – including those left unemployed or restricted by COVID-19.

Tackling economic inequality

Promoting Social Mobility is our flagship cause; we are a Top 75 employer in the Social Mobility Index and support organisations including The Elephant Group, Greater Change, Street League, and the Social Mobility Foundation.

We contribute to the apprenticeships levy and introduced our Apprenticeship Programme and Summer Academy in 2022 - which sees university students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds spend time in our business (fully paid) learning core consulting skills from our teams and external trainers.

We share a commitment to fair and equitable working with all our suppliers, with consideration to treatment of SMEs. We adhere to the Prompt Payment Code administered by the Chartered Institute for Credit Management, committing us to fair, equitable, transparent standards in line with agreed terms.

How we will tackle Economic Inequality
We will tackle economic inequality through G-Cloud 14 by exploring provisions we can provide to clients through our partner charities.

To support access to the job-market for disadvantaged groups, we commit to running a skills session for disadvantaged young people with the Social Mobility foundation. This takes the form of a careers talk, mock interviews or a CV clinic. With the Elephant Group we will encourage young people form client areas to apply for our Summer School. We will explore opportunities to work with Greater Change to tackle homelessness in client areas, And we will work with Street League to Target youth unemployment with sports coaching to get young people into education, employment, or training.

Our approach to delivering the services includes a strong emphasis on upskilling and professional development for teams. Any services/solutions procured through G-Cloud 14 would be handed over to the client, complemented with training for sustainability.
We will look for opportunities to sub-contract to SMEs, targeting 10%. Potential sub-contractors could be Xantura who we have worked with already.

Equal opportunity

We are committed to identifying and tackling inequalities in employment, skills, and pay within our workforce. Through employee surveys, process audits, and discussions with the leadership team, we assess over 200 indicators of employee experience and equity-centred best practices.

We launched working groups to develop strategies to tackle workplace inequality, covering Pay Equity, Recruitment and hiring, Leadership and Development, Flexibility and Family Friendliness and Culture of Inclusion.

We are in Stonewall’s Top 100 company index, are part of the 30% Club’s Mission Include campaign, and have launched a diverse talent development scheme.  Our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) policy is aligned with the Equality Act and nine protected characteristics and our maternity and adoption, fertility treatment and menopause policies are industry leading. We centrally fund six EDI networks, encouraging belonging and allyship. Our EDI Steering Group is accountable for governance and driving company commitments.

How we will support Equal Opportunity
Newton commits to delivering commitments aimed at supporting inclusive leadership and equal opportunity for all employees. These include:
• inclusive leadership and governance strategy that includes identifying, recruiting and developing diverse talent.
• lead indicators to measure equality of opportunity to ensure equality of outcome
• improvement cycle centred on upward feedback for our leaders and create an environment whereby transparent feedback is encouraged and expected.
• 1-2-1 Inclusive Leadership Coaching Pathway Programme to best equip and support our leaders to know their authentic style and prioritise and advocate for inclusivity.
• learning and development opportunities are provided and available for all grades.
• equitable approach for both structured and informal mentoring opportunities across the business.
Implementation is the responsibility of a series of working groups, which feed into a central Steering Group. Our progress in better supporting in-work progression and is measured in our company-wide equity survey.

Wellbeing

We are committed to promoting physical and mental wellbeing in the delivery of our services. A key risk to individuals involved in framework delivery will be stress – from long-hours, frequent tight deadlines, and being tied to a laptop – which can have a significant negative impact on mental and physical wellbeing. To address these risks, we engage with clients to co-design call-off requirements with due consideration for working practices.

How we will support Wellbeing
During service provision, all our teams will have access to:
• A network of volunteer Mental Health First Aiders from within our workforce. Mental Health First Aiders provide a trusted and accessible point of contact for those who feel their mental health is suffering. Training is offered twice yearly, and we endeavour to maintain the number of available Mental Health First Aiders at approximately 10% of our overall staffing numbers.

• Newton’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provided by Help@Hand, and provides confidential advice and guidance on a wide range of issues, as well as offering remote consultations with GPs and mental health practitioners.

• Newton’s fortnightly ‘N-Gauge’ surveys asking staff about work-life balance, managerial support, professional development, clarity of direction, understanding of KPIs, and lifestyle factors (e.g. sleep, diet, and exercise); staff can respond anonymously.

Our N-Gauge survey provides us with an overall wellbeing score based on the answers each respondent provides. We work to a target wellbeing score of above 80%. We work to develop targeted interventions if the score falls below this.

When working on clients programmes our team will be assigned a Wellbeing Representative to prioritise, monitor, and promote wellbeing within the programme delivery. During every programme, we hold regular team meetings to discuss ways of promoting wellbeing, facilitated by Newton’s Programme Manager and a Wellbeing Rep.
