Independence of resources
Microsoft mitigates demand fluctuations on Modern Work services through proactive monitoring and service management. This includes major incident management to rapidly identify user impact and drive remediation, evergreen management to absorb continuous service evolution, and service desk/normal incident management using automation and performance metrics. Workloads and configurations are controlled via the Admin Portal, with an added focus on business consumption and productivity to maximise value. The Microsoft 365 Admin Centre provides key change tools: Message Centre (planned changes) and Service Health (active issues/service status), accessible via web and the Microsoft 365 Admin app.

Approach to resilience
Microsoft’s datacentre design is resilient and aligns with the UK Government’s 2nd Cloud Security Principle, Asset Protection and Resilience. Microsoft online services use redundant architecture, deploying multiple service instances across geographically and physically separate hardware to improve fault tolerance. Resilience is further strengthened through data replication and automated integrity checking. Microsoft also submits annual evidence that its enterprise cloud services meet the G-Cloud Cloud Security Principles, supported by ISO/IEC 27001 certification and independent checks by a GDS accreditor. In-scope services support storage and processing of UK OFFICIAL government data.
Outage reporting
Microsoft provides multiple ways to report and receive notifications of service outages across BizApps and Azure Cloud. Users can check the public service status dashboard to view current health and link into detailed Service Health information. Programmatic access is available through the Service Communications API in Microsoft Graph and Azure APIs such as the Events/impacted resources endpoints. Customers can also subscribe to email alerts for tenant incidents and status updates, and configure Azure Service Health alerts. For urgent issues, Microsoft recommends mobile push notifications via the Azure mobile app. Alerts can also be integrated with ITSM tools using webhooks. Power BI supports outage notification emails.

Software Security Code of Practice
Yes

Operational security

Configuration and change management standard
Complies with a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v4.0 or SSAE-18 / ISAE 3402
Configuration and change management approach
Modern Work enforces structured change management for both code and non-code updates to maintain security and system integrity. Service teams use ticketing and source control tools to document changes, approvals, and audit evidence. Releases follow Microsoft’s Secure Development Lifecycle (SDL), incorporating security-focused code reviews, testing, and formal approval checkpoints before deployment. Proposed changes are reviewed for justification, scope, security impact, priority, dependencies, deployment approach, roles, and responsibilities, all recorded in the change tracking system. Rejected changes are documented with rationale. Configuration management maintains baseline secure configurations, tracks deviations, and uses automated monitoring to prevent drift. Regular audits validate compliance.
Vulnerability management type
Complies with a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v4.0 or SSAE-18 / ISAE 3402
Vulnerability management approach
You’re right — here’s within 100 words:

Microsoft assesses threats using the Detection and Response Team (DART), which proactively hunts for cyber threats that have breached environments and identifies new vulnerabilities beyond known alerts. DART uses tiered data collection, gathering indicator-rich telemetry across endpoints to detect attack patterns and suspicious behaviour. Microsoft also aggregates threat intelligence from first-party feeds (honeypots, malicious IPs, botnets, malware detonation) and correlates insights via SIEM and XDR platforms. Vulnerability management tools support prioritisation and remediation. Patch deployment speed is risk-driven, with mechanisms to accelerate rollout of critical security updates.
Protective monitoring type
Complies with a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v4.0 or SSAE-18 / ISAE 3402
Protective monitoring approach
Azure security defines requirements for active monitoring, with service teams configuring tools such as the Microsoft Monitoring Agent (MMA) and System Centre Operations Manager to deliver alerts to security personnel when immediate action is needed. Azure continuously monitors risk using adaptive machine learning and heuristics to detect anomalies and signs of identity compromise, even when devices are off-network. When compromise is suspected, Microsoft follows a structured incident response process to coordinate investigation and remediation, reviewing risky users and Azure Monitor activity logs to confirm issues, contain exposure, and evict threat actors. Initial response times vary by support plan and severity.
Incident management type
Complies with a recognised standard, for example, CSA CCM v4.0 or ISO/IEC 27035:2011 or SSAE-18 / ISAE 3402
Incident management approach
Microsoft uses a federated security incident response model, where each major online service team follows a shared incident management process, definitions, and training to ensure consistent response. The Microsoft 365 (Modernwork) Security Response team provides centralised security expertise and guidance, and may engage specialist partners and subject matter experts across Microsoft as needed. Responsibilities are shared between the Security Response team and Modern Work service teams to deliver an enterprise-wide strategy. Incident response aligns to NIST 800-61 phases: preparation; detection and analysis; containment, eradication and recovery; and post-incident activity. Microsoft aims to respond rapidly to protect services and customer data.
