Fighting climate change

At miso, we take a structured approach to understanding and managing our environmental impact. We begin with regular environmental risk assessments across our operations that include reviewing the office energy use, travel-related emissions, equipment lifecycle, procurement practices and cloud infrastructure. The outcomes identify areas of material environmental risk.

By assessing the likelihood and impact of these risk factors, we prioritise mitigation efforts that are practical, data-led and aligned with our values.

Sustainability is embedded into our day-to-day operations through a range of internal policies. Our team operates under a remote meeting first model to reduce travel-related emissions, and when travel is necessary, we follow a green travel policy that prioritises low-carbon transport options. We maintain a no-print policy and use renewable materials throughout our office space.

Technically, we continuously review and optimise our cloud usage, applying a “cost and carbon” lens to reduce unnecessary data storage and compute cycles. We also favour cloud providers with strong climate credentials, most notably Microsoft Azure, which is committed to operating on 100% renewable energy by 2025.

While our focus is on reducing emissions, we recognise that some environmental impacts cannot be entirely eliminated. To address these, we invest in carbon offset projects. We favour local initiatives and where possible, support nature-based solutions that contribute to biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.

We also explore opportunities for data-for-good collaborations with environmental organisations, using our skills to support climate resilience and sustainability efforts beyond our direct footprint.

Covid-19 recovery

miso continues to leverage digital and geospatial technologies in support of the United Kingdom’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the crisis and beyond, we have worked with local councils and public sector partners to develop rapid response geospatial solutions. For example, tools for locating vaccination centres and identifying at-risk communities. These tools have since evolved into lasting spatial intelligence resources that support more effective decision-making and improved public health outcomes.

We are acutely aware of the long-term impact that the pandemic has had on people’s lives, including members of our own team. Several of our staff live with Long COVID or have taken on additional caregiving responsibilities as a direct result of the pandemic.

In response to the impact on our team, we introduced the Flexible Recovery Support Programme. This is a tailored initiative offering adaptive working patterns, phased return-to-work options and enhanced leave flexibility for those managing long-term health or caring challenges.

As a business we promote hybrid working as standard practice. We maintain a clean and hygienic working environment and provide access to third-party mental health support services, recognising both the visible and less-visible effects of the pandemic on individual wellbeing.

Our approach is grounded in empathy, adaptability and a long-term commitment to supporting our people and the communities that we serve.

Tackling economic inequality

We believe that geospatial and data technologies can play a vital role in tackling economic inequality and driving inclusive growth. Through the geospatial solutions we deliver, we support public bodies and charities in improving
Access to services
Infrastructure planning
Resource allocation
Ultimately these solutions enable better support for underserved or vulnerable populations.

We are also committed to creating accessible career pathways within the data and geospatial sectors. Our recruitment approach includes targeted outreach to diverse talent and the use of bias-reducing hiring practices to ensure a fair and inclusive process. This reflects our broader aim to improve representation in technology and data roles, and to foster a working environment that is open, supportive and socially responsible.

In support of skills development, we offer free educational FME licences for universities, helping students to build practical experience with widely used geospatial tools and better prepare for careers in the sector.

In addition to client-facing work, we develop socially valuable datasets that contribute to more informed policymaking. Datasets include data on housing quality, local deprivation and community infrastructure. The datasets are designed to be open and accessible, empowering stakeholders across sectors to better understand the challenges facing different communities.

miso also recognises our responsibility to support the local economy. Wherever possible we prioritise working with regional suppliers and environmentally responsible manufacturers. For example, during our recent office move, we sourced furniture from a local business in the West Midlands. A top choice was our custom-made desks produced by the local workshop using sustainably sourced wood.

Aligning our procurement practices with both economic and environmental goals, we ensure that our footprint contributes positively to the communities around us.

Equal opportunity

We embed equal opportunity into our culture and daily operations. We have a strong focus on ensuring that all individuals, regardless of background, have the support and recognition that they need to thrive.

Our recruitment and progression processes are built around structured, skills-based assessments designed to reduce bias and highlight capability. We actively monitor diversity data across recruitment, retention and progression to ensure fair representation and accountability.

We are committed to improving representation across all levels of the organisation, particularly in technical and leadership roles where systemic barriers remain.

Currently, 40% of our workforce identify as women, a figure that we are proud of and actively working to improve. We attend and support sector events such as Women in Data to connect with diverse talent, share knowledge and stay engaged with wider conversations around inclusion in the data and technology sectors. Internally, we run mentoring and peer support schemes to help underrepresented staff build confidence and progress in their careers.

Neurodiversity is another key focus of our inclusion work. 20% of our team identify as neurodiverse and we are committed to providing the right environment and tools to help everyone thrive. We offer quiet working areas, sensory-friendly environments, noise-cancelling headphones and flexible workspace options. We follow a personalised approach to workplace adjustments based on open conversation and a commitment to adapt where needed.

We offer flexible working hours, remote and hybrid roles, and accessible onboarding processes to support all team members. Our work is guided by best practice and informed by standards such as Human Resource Management – Diversity and Inclusion helping us embed inclusive behaviours across leadership, culture, systems and processes.

We invest annually in training and development covering inclusive leadership, neurodiversity awareness and unconscious bias, ensuring our workplace culture remains open, reflective and inclusive by design.

Wellbeing

Employee wellbeing is a core priority at miso. We recognise that a healthy, supported team is essential to both personal and organisational success. We are committed to fostering a culture where wellbeing is actively prioritised and embedded in the way we work.

We offer a range of initiatives and resources designed to support both physical and mental health. All staff have access to independent, confidential mental health support services. We also run regular internal training to promote psychological safety, respectful communication and a discrimination-free workplace. Our wellbeing conversations are ongoing and built into our regular check-ins and team culture. These are proactive measures, not reactive measures.

We provide flexible and remote working arrangements to help our people maintain a healthy work-life balance and feel empowered in how and where they work. Whether it is adjusting working hours for personal or family commitments or supporting phased returns to work following illness or extended leave. Our approach is centred on trust, flexibility and open communication.

Our office spaces have been carefully designed with wellbeing in mind. We have invested in high-quality, ergonomic equipment and created bright, comfortable workspaces that include natural materials, communal areas and plenty of greenery.

The presence of plants and relaxed breakout zones contributes to a calm, welcoming atmosphere that encourages both focus and connection.

As part of our wider commitment to wellbeing, we are working towards a formal Wellbeing Charter. A clear statement of our values, commitments and practices in this space. It will serve as a guide for how we support each other and continue to build a workplace where people can truly thrive.
