Fighting climate change
We continually drive sustainable change in every part of our operations and are committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2025. Ongoing initiatives include:
• Members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance and signatories of The Legal Renewables Initiative – a commitment to getting to 100% renewable energy by 2025 – and the Greener Litigation Pledge.
• Active members of The Chancery Lane Project, a collaboration between barristers, solicitors and academics to create the legal conditions necessary to achieve Net Zero.
• ISO 14001 – wrapping the Net Zero Programme together into a structured management approach to embed within the business, we achieved ISO 14001 accreditation in 2022. Sustainability Forums will be launched with additional awareness and upskilling provided to forum leads.
• Reducing energy consumption – we are working with building management to encourage energy consumption reduction measures and procurement from renewable energy sources plus the benefits from on-site generation in the form of rooftop solar panels and battery storage. Installation of EV charging points at offices for employees are in place.
• In 2024 our Manchester team moved to ground-breaking sustainable office space in Salford at Eden, designed to be one of the UK’s most sustainable office buildings. This follows our Glasgow team’s move to Cadworks in Glasgow in 2022, the firm’s first concept office in one of the most sustainable and innovative buildings in Scotland.
• Influencing our landlords – We are also working with building management in its offices to encourage energy consumption reduction measures and procurement from renewable energy sources plus the benefits from on-site generation in the form of rooftop solar panels and battery storage.
• Introducing new sustainable employee benefits such as a green car leasing scheme, and engaging with colleagues on sustainability issues through initiatives such as Earth Hour and our employee Sustainability Forums.Wellbeing
Our Mental Health and Wellbeing (MH&W) initiatives fully integrate with our HR policies, including recruitment, training and promotion, to ensure that career development and rewards are based on merit.
• MH&W Champions - our programme improves employee access to support by connecting colleagues with identifiable trained volunteers across the firm.
• Mindful Business Charter - as signatories we work with one another and our clients to reflect the charter. We champion these principles through encouraging open conversation with clients – such as discussing working hours and expectations at the beginning of a contract - as well as including our working hours, advance notice of leave and availability expectations as part of our e-mail signatures.
• As a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we created ‘TLT World’ in June 2021. TLT World is our firm’s approach to agile working, with 3 areas (hours, location and environment) that our colleagues can flex to best suit them, their team and their clients. It necessitated a significant long-term shift in our working practices to create a fully flexible progressive, inclusive and sustainable work environment whereby every employee can make the choice of how they work without mandated office time. TLT World remains in place today, at a time when many of our competitors are requiring a return to the office.
• Reward & Recognition - we recognise the importance of gratitude and recognition. We're driven by a way of working that we call the 'TLT Way', in which colleagues are rewarded financially through our 'Exceed' programme, on a monthly basis for staff who display TLT’s five values that deliver clients' desired outcomes.
• Metrics & Tools/Processes - to monitor the progress of our Health and Wellbeing initiatives, we have in place several metrics such as our annual employee survey to gather data driven feedback.
