Fighting climate change

The Fighting Climate Change theme is designed to meet the policy outcome of effective stewardship of the environment. This is aimed at supporting the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan to improve the environment within a generation and target a “Green Future” and how local communities and businesses can support this through all stages of business operations.

Example of what we do:

Carbon neutral and sustainability: We believe we all have a part to play in reducing emissions and working in a sustainable way – not just in how we operate as a business, but helping our clients to determine opportunities, build team capabilities, and adopt strategies that enable them to maximise ESG improvements without compromising on cost management. We have committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and we are continually seeking to reduce emissions. We are ISO14001 accredited which measures and tests our environmental responsibilities, including the procurement of goods or services, our in-house operations, and the services we provide to our clients. We help our clients to address climate change by embedding environmental objectives in work with suppliers, e.g. requesting dual submissions for all RFPs – one optimising cost and one low-carbon proposal; mandating Net Zero commitments and carbon reduction plan for suppliers; and developing Supplier Management Dashboards reflecting both spend performance and climate change KPI performance. We have adopted the following carbon reduction targets, against a 2018/19 baseline: 15% reduction in GHG emissions (Scope 1+2) intensity per full-time employee by the end of 2025; 20% reduction in business travel emissions intensity per full-time employee by the end of 2025.

Covid-19 recovery

The Covid-19 recovery theme is designed to meet the policy outcome to help local communities recover from the impact of Covid-19. The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated multiple social and economic challenges whilst adding new ones. Social value benefits in this area should focus on communities, economies, employment, training, developing new ways of working and supporting people who were affected by the pandemic.

Example of what we do:

Building operational resilience: Leveraging the lessons learnt during of the COVID-19 response, we are accelerating the future of work by using technology to enable transformational change for our clients across the public and private sector. We have been able to adapt a flexible/remote working culture, this means where appropriate; meetings, workshops, training etc. can delivered remotely without any disruption. Through redefining our HR function, we were able to create employment and other return to work opportunities for those left unemployed by COVID-19 increasing our workforce by almost 3 times the head count since then. We place emphasis on support for people and communities to manage and recover from the impacts of COVID-19 through different internal initiatives. We continue to support organisations and businesses through redefining their operating model to make them more resilient and robust business. We also continue to help clients with all aspects of their end-to-end procurement and contract management to save costs and simplify processes.

Tackling economic inequality

Tackling the economic inequality is designed to meet the policy outcome to create new businesses, jobs and skills. This strategy is aimed to encourage the creation of better and higher paid jobs across the country. The intention is for the development of the current and future work force, in particular industries that lack the required skills and to help narrow the disparity between communities.

Example of what we do:

Supporting education and skills development: We believe that education and skills development are essential for creating a more sustainable future. We actively look for ways to employ, upskill and train people within our organisation, taking part in programmes such as mentoring to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, supporting local employment initiatives and working with our clients to identify opportunities to address any inequalities where possible. We strongly advocate collaboration throughout our organisation, clients and supply chain. We partner with WiseUp (https://wiseupnetworks.com/) to provide mentoring to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Equal opportunity

Equality Opportunity is designed to meet the policy outcomes of reducing the disability employment gap and tackling workforce inequality. This strategy is aimed at creating a society where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential within their life and careers irrespective of any perceived barriers or characteristics.

Example of what we do:

We recognise that increasing our diversity gives us and our clients a broader range of experience, expertise and attitudes. Our aim is to foster inclusivity, equality, and increase diversity among our workforces. We have implemented several initiatives resulting in a 23% increase of women in our UK workforce and almost doubled the number of women in senior positions since 2020. In addition, we conduct Bi-annual performance reviews, extensive training opportunities and pay audits ensuring everyone is offered opportunities for further development and compensated fairly and equitably, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, or other protected characteristics.

We work with clients to facilitate workshops to identify and agree initiatives to increase equality and inclusion, using Diversity and Inclusion Spend analysis data to measure and drive improvement. We also implement policies to prioritise local companies near service sites, promoting local employment and sustainability by reducing travel distances and fuel usage. Our strategy involves bypassing middlemen—larger contracting firms—directly connecting clients with local businesses, fostering efficiency and community engagement.

Our consultants actively seek to drive diversity and inclusion in the consulting industry, with roles such as Vice Chair for Diversity & Inclusion and Vice Chair for Networks & Universities on the Young Management Consultancies Association (MCA) Executive Committee. They champion allyship, organise inclusive events, and contribute to content promoting better allyship. Adopting best practices and D&I toolkits, we enhance talent attraction, recruitment, and onboarding for improved client and societal outcomes.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is designed to meet policy outcomes of improving health & wellbeing and improving community integration. Monitoring and addressing wellbeing within workplaces are a priority in order to ensure everyone can remain in and thrive at work. Improving community integration ensures people can give back to their local communities and support the drive to level up the UK economy.

Example of what we do:

Efficio understands when it comes to mental health and wellbeing, it is important to ensure we have active measures to raise awareness and increase the influence of employees, suppliers, customers, communities and/or any other appropriate stakeholders to promote health and wellbeing.

We provide our staff with resources to support mental and physical wellbeing, including internal networks providing a safe space to share experiences, have discussions and provide a supportive community. Our well-being committee focuses on promoting overall employee wellbeing by undertaking initiatives to support mental health and recognition of individuals' contributions.

We regularly update stress-monitoring risk assessments for all projects, ensuring employees (both ours & client) are properly supported and not overworked. We measure employee well-being and performance linked to health and wellbeing factors. It is important to monitor signs to ensure burnout is avoided.

All employees have a mentor and buddy, to provide them with a community of colleagues to talk to about their wellbeing, ensuring they are supported outside of a project atmosphere.

We encourage project teams to participate in team building exercises – we ensure an internal budget is allocated for team building activities outside of the direct working environment.

We conduct an anonymous annual employee survey to monitor wellbeing levels across the company. The survey gives everyone the opportunity to provide honest feedback which can be used to help drive the positive mental health and wellbeing agenda within our organisation.
