Roke has an Environmental management system which has been independently audited and ISO 14001:15 certified by BSI, a UKAS certification body. All our environmental aspects and impacts have been identified, planned, managed and are regularly reviewed to ensure continual improvement in this area. We have a number of targets and objectives: the main one is to reduce power consumption by 3% year on year this is achieved by power efficiency through design and in particular replacing lighting during refurbishment with environmentally friendly low power alternatives. In our future planning we are looking at options to change the backup generator systems for business continuity with renewable energy options and have planned in electric vehicle charging points in the redesigned car parking project. We have an Environmental management committee and sustainability and social responsibility working groups. We have recently changed from Diesel to sustainable hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) which will reduce or scope 1 carbon foot print by 90% in 2022/23.

We look to save time and reduce CO2 by using video conferencing and hosting clients in Roke offices local to themselves where possible. For example, quarterly client meetings with the development teams of a key client operational system that Roke maintains are now held using Video Conferencing. Roke has also invested in the ability to provide live demonstrations hosted in the cloud, for example on the POLAR BEAR service we provide for clients based in London.
Covid-19 recovery

Covid-19 recovery

During what proved to be a difficult time for all, Roke applied, and continues to where necessary, its expertise and knowledge to ensure maximum safety for employees and visitors of Roke. With several measures and approaches to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Roke were able to minimise disruption and carry on as business as usual.

Some of the measures taken to mitigate and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic include, but not limited to; Risk assessments, regular communications between the business, hygiene stations, liquid guarding of high-touch surfaces such as hot desks, social distancing, face coverings, weekly COVID Working Group, COVID support line and a monthly COVID “Playbook” that was distributed to the wider business. This includes briefings and updates regarding COVID-19 and the latest rules and regulations we should follow. The playbook also provides reminders and guidance around Roke’s measures and controls that supports the recovery of COVID-19.
Tackling economic inequality

Tackling economic inequality

Roke partners with Employee Resource groups to recruit recruitment and talent acquisition at all levels, for instance by reviewing language in job adverts. We run regular courses in unconscious bias as part of the management development programme and for those undertaking external recruitment. Roke benchmarks salaries against similar organisations and demographic factors are taken into account. We have an ambition to at least meet the IET #9PercentIsNotEnough campaign and the Grad intake in 2020 was 25% female. Further to this, we also publish equality salaries report.
Equal opportunity

Equal opportunity

In 2020 Roke launched an updated behaviours framework, an integral part of our people development frameworks, which includes the value “One Roke” - we recognise that our strength comes from our diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and that we all have a responsibility to create an environment where we all have the freedom, support and trust to succeed. We are encouraged to bring our whole self to work and we respect our Roke community, embracing diversity, tolerance and inclusivity across the business. Roke runs a network of Employee Resource Groups which act as communities to lead initiatives in various areas, including Women in Roke, Inspire (LGBT+), Majority Ethnic, Veterans, Neuro-diversity and geographically focused groups.

Roke works closely with local schools and colleges to nurture young people from diverse backgrounds and encourage them to take an active interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We believe that such educational outreach is fundamental to ensuring the UK continues to be competitive in the development of cutting edge technology. Our activities in this area include engineering involvement days, such as child to work day and work experience placements, as well as visiting schools to bring the curriculum to life with examples of exciting technology.

With an increased hire of Graduate/Apprentices, there has been renewed focus on the development of a network of Early Careers employees. The Group continues to target and attract increasing numbers of early careers joiners, both direct from school or following degree-level study. An annual UK Early Careers Conference has been established, bringing together all current graduates from the UK and Norway. The past year has seen the addition of a senior role overseeing people development across the Group, a leadership development programme, and updates to professional development frameworks.
Wellbeing

Wellbeing

The Group Strategic HSE Improvement Plan has included a Roke Safety Week run in September 2020 that improved learning and demonstrated Roke's core value of safety. A new HSE Management System Framework Standard has been introduced and stronger assurance and risk management processes introduced. We hold regular executive leadership HSE meetings and consultation via an HSE committee.

The Healthy Workplaces working group focuses on key initiatives to promote wellbeing at work and mental health has been a focus this year. The group aims to help people make better decisions for themselves for a healthier lifestyle both at work and at home. Roke has a network of trained Mental Health Champions and Mental Health First Aiders. At Roke, we run a number of Employee Assistance Programmes, which are an employee benefit designed to assist employees with personal problems and/or work-related problems that may impact their job performance, health, mental and emotional well-being. Roke also has an active social club that exists to provide a focus for social activities across the site, comprising of a number of clubs and interest groups with the aim of improving community integration.

Rokes people management systems has recently been independently audited BSI, a UKAS certification body and certified as compliant with ISO 14003:21 (management of psychological and psychosocial hazards); Roke are one of the first companies to achieve this new standard

Employee Voice is a real-time engagement tool providing dashboard information on employee sentiment across the Group on a continuous basis, and enables employees to provide immediate feedback to change.
