Fighting climate change
DAC have adopted flexible working and are trialling the 4 day working week during 2024/25. Staff are able to work from home unless they need 1-1 physical support from Team support staff.
These measures help to reduce pollution caused by travelling.
Our environment policy states no single use plastic is to be used in our offices and only recycled paper is to used for printing.
We operate a Digital first policy regarding printing.
Printing should be kept to a minimum and only items legally required to be stored in hard copy should be printed.Covid-19 recovery
DAC have adopted flexible working and are trialling the 4 day working week during 2024/25 which is proving invaluable to staff, some of whom have been left feeling somewhat traumatised over the whole Covid pandemic episode.
DAC have provided all staff and their families with access to Health Assured Employee Assistance Programme, which includes counselling sessions for DAC staff and their direct family members.
Staff are able to work from home if they feel it benefits their mental health.
ATW assessments ensure we are providing the correct equipment so those people working from home have the correct ergonomic and assistive technology to best suit their circumstances.Tackling economic inequality
Most staff come to DAC via employment programmes for people with disabilities and many live in deprived areas and were previously economically inactive.
Most are low in confidence in their abilities. DAC staff work to integrate them into the 'DAC family' and to lift their confidence levels by making sure they feel supported straight away. They receive robust training, delivered in the way each person prefers to learn over a 6 months period.Training is delivered by senior analysts and some training is provided by other members of the team with the same disability. Thereafter they are assigned a mentor for 12 months to help continue their learning and to bolster their new found confidence in their abilities.
Teams groups for users with similar disabilities are widely used and prove invaluable because everyone in the group helps everyone else in the group, both with work challenges and with other disability related life challenges.
When testing, users have their own audit Teams group where they meet everyday to discuss how testing is progressing with that particular audit and to discuss any issues that don't have an obvious solution. New staff also receive support via this group and say it is invaluable in helping them to integrate into the DAC team because they feel they are contributing even whilst they are learning.Equal opportunity
Digital Accessibility Centre is a not for profit, Ltd by Guarantee Social Enterprise,
Our mission is to provide relevant valuable, meaningful and sustainable employment to disabled people wherever possible.
We are Living Wage Foundation accredited employers and have been for quite a few years.
We are also Disability Confident Employers.
There is ample opportunity to progress within the organisation and training is given to help people develop and increase their earning power.
Our staff churn is almost non-existent.
Most of DAC staff (approx 67 of 80) have a disability and/or health condition.Wellbeing
DAC realise that our answer is similar to that of Covid 19 section but Covid 19 is playing a big part in staff mental wellbeing currently, so our answer to this question is very similar to our answer to the Covid 19 question.
In order to afford our staff a better work/life balance, DAC have been trialling the 4 day working week during 2023/24 which is proving invaluable to staff, some of which are still feeling raw, exhausted and traumatised over the pandemic and how much everything has changed because of it.
DAC have provided all staff with access to Health Assured Employee Assistance Programme, which amongst other benefits includes access to free counselling sessions for DAC staff and their direct family members.
DAC will also pay for up to 10 private face to face counselling sessions with a suitably qualified therapist if this approach is identified as being the best one.
Staff are able to work from home or the office or adopt hybrid working between office and home if they feel it benefits their mental health.
ATW assessments ensure we are providing the correct equipment so those people working from home have the correct ergonomic and assistive technology to best suit their circumstances.
