- How the planning service works
- Our preference is to work with our clients early on in the development life cycle, involving them at every key stage to make sure that the project is progressing as expected. We are equally comfortable delivering using agile or waterfall methodologies and are able to change our approach to suit the customers needs. We work in small, highly skilled multi-disciplined delivery teams, and build quality into the process from the outset. Our experienced Delivery Managers will lead the planning process, prioritise tasks and manage quality and risks. This enables our delivery teams to be focussed and deliver quality products to shorter time scales. We have access to highly skilled resources who can provide expertise in disciplines such as software development, UX, user research, technical & security architecture and business change.

- How the setup or migration service works
- The benefits of moving to a Cloud-based delivery approach are tangible. These include: faster time to market for changes and updates; reduced development costs; reduced hosting costs. The challenges of migrating to the Cloud, however, can be significant. This is magnified by the range of strongly associated challenges that need to be addressed as part of the overall change. These include: DevOps; Cloud Hosting and Distributed Security technologies. Our delivery teams have delivered solutions in a range of complex situations. We are acutely aware of the challenges involved, and how to effectively resolve those challenges with a range of tools and techniques. We can help our clients to assess if a Cloud-based architecture is right for them. We have experience with several platforms that can be used for Cloud delivery, and will support our clients in the selection of the most appropriate tools for the task. If a Cloud-hosting platform is not in place, we will work with our client to ensure that all necessary hosting aspects are considered to provide an effective platform. Similarly, we can assist with implementing and continuous integration and deployment culture to support the Cloud-based platform.

- How the quality assurance and performance testing works
-
We are experienced in defining and executing Quality Assurance and Testing strategies, plans, defect management, governance, and strive for continuous improvement.
Our quality engineering teams will seek to build quality into the architecture and software from the onset. Working with architects, developers, and BA's we integrate the design of our unit, integration, and UI tests into the service using tools such as Junit, Mockito, RestAssured/Sharp, Cypress, CodeCept, Specflow, Serenity etc. Our automated tests are integrated as stage on CI/CD pipelines to provide confidence in build and release quality . We apply 'lean' thinking to continually optimise the test-suite design. Automated cross-browser/accessibility testing is implemented to ensure services are WCAG2.1AA compliant. We seek a minimum test coverage of 90%.
Our approach to Performance Testing and Engineering encompasses Load Testing, Stress Testing, Volume Testing, Soak Testing, Scalability Testing and Capacity Planning. We apply our shift-left strategy to identify, target and solve performance defects early in the development lifecycle using tools such as Gatling, Jmeter and Loadrunner.

Fighting climate change
We are committed to meeting the goal of net zero by 2050 outlined in the Climate Change Act (2008), and recognise the impact of climate change for both current and future generations. Solirius has committed to setting scientifically based targets in line with the SBTi criteria, setting targets for each of the seven GHGs, consistent with the level of decarbonisation required to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5˚C above pre-industrial temperatures. To support this we have a ‘Net Zero Ambassador’s’ employee group, putting our staff and their ideas at the heart of our plans to achieve Net Zero. We publish annually our GHG emissions, and measure these against our Carbon Reduction Plan targets showing our contribution to reduction targets. To understand our employees carbon footprint we have enhanced our timecard and invoicing system to capture richer data on permanent and temporary staff travel, in order to target further reductions in emissions. We promote the use of public transport, and have implemented a more wide-reaching flexible working policy, reducing the amount of time staff commute to our office on top of client requirements. This has allowed us to keep a smaller office space, reducing any additional location based wasted energy consumption. We extend our environmental goals to those of our clients, taking on their good practices and sharing ours. We co-design sustainability principles covering:
reducing travel carbon emissions and water consumption
avoid printing documents and encouraging recycling
development of ‘Sustainable’ user personas for digital services
adoption of standard sustainability-led non-functional requirements when designing new systems
These lead to digital solutions that serve business objectives and environmental goals through energy-efficient infrastructure or applications that promote sustainable behaviours among end-users.Covid-19 recovery
The pandemic highlighted the importance of having a flexible and hybrid work model, underpinned by a company culture that understands and promotes the importance of a healthy work-life balance, and mental and physical health. We used the lessons learned from the pandemic to develop policies and practices targeted at supporting our employees across all of these areas. Our commitment to foster and grow an inclusive company culture includes many initiatives including:
Gender Diversity Group
Monthly Company socials
Monthly Culture meetings (club)
Quarterly practice meetings to promote knowledge sharing and networking
Bi-annual whole company parties
Weekly 5-aside football club
We support flexible working, ensuring that all employees are able to purchase home office equipment, allowing them to work from home alongside client requirements. We allow flexible hours within acceptable limits set by the client. We have strengthened client relationships through extending invitations to town halls, industry talks, wellbeing initiatives and socials and networking opportunities, for example talks and socials.Since Covid, we recognise that many of our clients have adopted a hybrid working approach, and have developed our flexible working policies so employees are able to realise the benefits of both face-to-face office interactions and remote working. In particular, our graduate programme includes significant time in the office working and learning alongside more senior consultants, and new joiners are required to spend time in the office to build strong working relationships with new colleagues. We understand the enduring impact the pandemic left in regards to the mental and physical health of the UK population. All of our employees now have access to health insurance, through which we offer access to professional mental health support, and schemes to help promote healthier lifestyles (gym memberships etc).Tackling economic inequality
In the UK, there are key areas where economic inequality is prevalent such as gender, ethnicity, disability status and regional location within the UK. According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) the UK has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the European Union, with disposable income inequality increasing to 35.7% from 34.4% in the financial year ending in 2022. Many of our consultants and leadership team come from underrepresented backgrounds in the industry. As such tackling inequality is built into our company processes, training and ways-of-working. We aid in tackling economic inequality through creating various pathways to employment, removing bias from our hiring process, raising awareness in underrepresented communities, and supporting skills growth within the workforce
We create ~100 new industry positions a year recruiting heavily from the graduate, apprenticeship, and career-change markets
Invested in developing in house training programmes and resources, to coach early starters in industry skills valued by our clients
Focus on upskilling young people, providing opportunities for graduates, T-Level Students, university placements and internship
Researching how to offer alternative employment routes such as apprenticeships
Provide tailored training programmes for the professional development of our consultants utilising 10 days of training per-annum.
Work with Universities, local schools, and NGOs to provide mentorships, coding lessons, interview skills workshops, and career guidance.
By being clear and transparent about salary structures we aim to foster trust and fairness, and remove any suspicion regarding pay inequality. This is done through:
Regular evaluations and setting of clear expectations per pay grade and steps needed for progression.
Offering London weighted salary to all employees.
We aim to ensure that our employees are financially literate, and understand how to manage their finances and increase their personal wealth by offering talks about pensions, and financial management.Equal opportunity
Significant discrepancies in equal opportunities persist within the UK digital sector, particularly affecting women, minorities, and people with disabilities.Having a diverse workforce strengthens us as a company, enabling us to deliver innovative and inclusive results for our clients. As such, we are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Many of our consultants come from underrepresented backgrounds in the industry, and we continuously promote and enable diversity across all levels of the organisation. By ensuring that Solirius is a flexible and open place to work we aim to retain and promote women and minorities to senior positions to provide role models for those entering the workforce. Measures to support diversity are implemented by our Diversity and Inclusion groups. Our Gender Diversity Group is where we provide a safe space for conversations about biases and issues in the industry and how, as a company, we can address them. We aim to reduce bias in our hiring process as creating equal opportunities starts at the recruitment process, where we follow the Equality Act (2010) to ensure fair and transparent recruitment. We are:
Utilising CV anonymisation
Training all interviewers on unconscious bias in the recruitment process
Looking to start providing apprenticeships/T-Levels/Placements to allow more routes into the industry that do not require degrees.
Opening positions to all locations in the UK, to reduce geographical barriers.
We are working to further remove barriers that often prevent people from considering a career in technology through:
Implementing The Good Work Plan.
Supporting flexible working arrangements allowing people to work remotely with the purchase of specialised equipment.
Provide benefits such as maternity/paternity leave packages and private healthcareWellbeing
The health and wellbeing of our staff, clients and community are embedded in every aspect of our culture. We place the mental, physical and emotional health of our teams first, implementing good practices into our organisational level processes and targets. We achieve this through a range of methods governed by our wellbeing policies, which include:
Sharing mental health best practices and liaising with team representatives to create a support network for all employees
Implementing a mentoring/buddy system to provide support to all new joiners and aid with professional and personal development
Providing access to designated qualified Mental Health First Aiders
Co-designing and iterating wellbeing provision opportunities with clients as the start of each new project, outlining expected behaviours and how they can access support when needed. This includes bi-weekly team health checks to understand performance and wellbeing levels and quarterly employee engagement sessions
Providing our employees with private medical insurance with mental health support services (Headspace, external therapy sessions and an Employee Assistance Programme)
Discounted gym memberships, and sports teams, such as our Solirius football team.
Additional benefits covering financial wellbeing, Gender Identity Cover, Group Income Protection, Life Assurance, Employee Assistance Programme (counselling, CBT, wellbeing)
Adhering to the Good Work Plan and creating measures covering occupational, mental, emotional, social, physical, financial and intellectual wellbeing.
Provide adjustments to all formal reviews to account for anxieties around progression discussions and shoutout great performance
Hold quarterly lunch and learns on health and wellbeing
We have included mental health objectives into organisational targets, e.g:
Committing to holding quarterly employee engagement sessions
Bi-annual mental health surveys
Providing mental health and wellbeing awareness courses
and programmes of work.
This ensures we are tackling the issues that matter the most to our consultants, and the outcomes are actioned by our Mental Health Workstream.
