Fighting climate change

At Opencast we help fight climate change and drive environmental protection through a range of initiatives, including contract-specific commitments that we deliver for our clients. We’re committed to achieve Net Zero by 2040 (or before) and to reduce CO2 emissions per FTE by 20% by 2027. Our Carbon Reduction Plan and Environmental Management policy include our commitment to minimising paper, packaging, energy, and water use; evaluation of the environmental impact of suppliers, transport, maintenance, and cleaning. Internally we offer a salary sacrifice car scheme for hybrid/electric vehicles (EV), a cycle-to-work scheme to reduce staff travel emissions and EV chargers, bike storage and showers to encourage ‘greener’ commutes. We also have stringent policies to minimise domestic flights. We’re phasing out energy-intensive hardware for more energy-efficient devices (e.g. New MacBooks reduce emissions from 710>271 kg CO2e per device) and we’re calculating emissions from internal cloud use. Alongside a dedicated Social Impact team, we have a dynamic employee-led Environmental Action Group to progress decarbonisation efforts. With our clients, we align recruitment and allocation to our clients’ locations to minimise travel. We offer environmental protection upskilling and awareness events. We advocate using planet-centred metrics, cloud sustainability frameworks and green software patterns to measure CO2. To manage our subcontractors and supply chain to support environment protection and improvement we have a sustainable procurement policy that supports us to assess environmental costs in supply chain decisions, along with an environment responsibility code-of-conduct. Within our wider community, Opencast are active founding members of the Dynamo Northeast sustainability cluster, increasing awareness, knowledge and supporting SMEs with GHG reduction efforts. We support local charities to improve green spaces in our towns and cities (e.g. pollinator habitats). Recent commitments included a grant to Trees for Cities, supporting the design and build of a playground to provide sustainability education for children.

Covid-19 recovery

At Opencast we support COVID-19 recovery through a range of initiatives, including contract-specific commitments that we deliver for our clients. Since the pandemic, we’ve increased our headcount significantly – from 150 to 450+ employees from 2021-2024. This included hiring people at threat of redundancy as a result of COVID-19. We continue to seek innovative ways to engage those re-training/getting back in to work. This includes participating in our clients’ events and initiatives – we took a key part in DWP’s Hack2Work event, supporting people to return to work after the pandemic. To support COVID-19 recovery, we continue to provide safe and flexible hybrid-working environments including remote-working measures. During the pandemic we invested in a new HQ (co-designed by our employees) and provided equipment for home-working (laptops, monitors, keyboards, chairs, desks etc.) to ensure all our people were set up for safe and healthy working. To support our people’s mental and physical wellbeing we offer our Employee Assistance Programme, Peaceful Minds counselling service, and Health Shield corporate health scheme. Beyond this, a range of virtual and in person events (with relevant safety precautions) were introduced during COVID-19 and the increased period of remote working to ensure people felt supported. Moving forward, we have ambitious growth plans and continue to invest in job opportunities in our local communities including at our HQ in Newcastle – a deprived area in the UK; many hit hard by the impacts of the pandemic.

Tackling economic inequality

From our HQ in Byker, Newcastle (top 1% of deprived UK areas) Opencast is committed to tackling economic inequality through a range of initiatives, including contract-specific commitments that we deliver for our clients. Through our socially impactful recruitment strategy we create employment and training opportunities for those who face barriers to employment, who are located in deprived areas, and people in industries with known skills-shortages. We create new businesses, jobs and skills in the North-East, through the Dynamo Tech Talent Engine (DTTE) supporting growth and innovation. We also actively address skills-shortages for individuals in the community when seeking employment and working to remove potential barriers to employment for underrepresented groups. We run recruitment, training, and upskilling initiatives for ‘early-career’ candidates across a range of digital and technology disciplines, working with partners (e.g. Ten10, FDM, Bright Network) to target diverse candidates. We provide work-experience (school-level) placements for students every year, with opportunities for career progression, and offer ‘Squiggly-careers’ training to support people to diversify into new digital and technology roles. To tackle inequality, we also partner with organisations (e.g. RNIB, ‘Access to Work’, ‘Durham Enable’) to create an inclusive organisation, providing opportunities for those with disabilities and work-experience for neurodiverse people. We’re aiming for Disability Confident Level 2 in 2024. Recently we won the national ‘Diversity and Inclusion Employer of the Year 2023’ at the Digital Revolution Awards, and ‘Dynamos Equality Diversity and Inclusion Award’ 2024.

We also provide dedicated People Experience Partners (PEEPs) to provide all our consultants support and pastoral care.  We partner with organisations (i.e., RNIB) to assess and provide workplace adjustments, and third-party organisations (i.e., ‘Access to Work’, ‘Bridge of Hope’ and ‘Durham Enable’) to improve inclusivity and provide opportunities for those with disabilities and work experience for neuro-diverse people. We’re also committed to the Armed Forces Covenant and partnerships to hire ex-forces. We monitor and measure impact by tracking I&D statistics through recruitment and HR tooling – reported at board level. We submit aggregated diversity data to the Tech Talent Charter and work with Tech Nation on I&D levelling. We recently won the Diversity & Inclusion Employer of the Year (2023 Digital Revolution).

Wellbeing

At Opencast we support physical and mental health and wellbeing through a range of initiatives, including contract-specific commitments that we deliver for our clients. We provide an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), providing 24/7 mental and physical health and wellbeing support; provide access to Peaceful Minds, a free confidential counselling service; and Health Shield, providing a corporate rate health scheme at varied levels for all our employees. All our consultants are provided with dedicated People Experience Partners (PEEPs), providing hands-on support and pastoral care. We run a range of virtual and in person events (i.e ‘lunch and learns’, new starter meet-ups sessions, company conferences) keeping people connected with our hybrid working model. In addition, we have a range of fitness and social groups from cycling (including a Cycle-to-Work scheme) to hiking, yoga to CrossFit, baking to self-defence classes. We also provide mental health training, with a number of trained Mental Health Champions and First Aiders across our business. These individuals run regular in-person and virtual drop-in sessions to support our people. We listen to our people, advocating a user-centric approach to our health and wellbeing initiatives. We conduct live, ongoing research with our employees (surveys, focus groups, interviews) to gather insights to enable us to iterate initiatives and test and learn – continuously improving our environment/culture.
