Fighting climate change

Fighting climate change

We strive to minimise our environmental impact and to embed sustainable best practices into our operations through: (1) Promoting sound environmental management policies and practices in work carried out by or on behalf of Gartner (2) Increasing awareness of environmental responsibilities among associates (3) Working with agencies locally, nationally and internationally to promote appropriate environmental policies (4) Minimising waste and pollution and operating effective waste management (5) Reducing the consumption of non-renewable resources (6) Promoting a purchasing policy which gives preference, wherever possible, to products/services that cause the least harm to the environment (7) Avoiding use, wherever possible, of environmentally damaging substances, materials and processes (8) Maintaining Gartner real estate in an environmentally sensitive way (9) Encouraging associates to use modes of transport that minimise environmental impact As a service company, the most significant opportunities to manage our impact lie in making strategic decisions around where we locate our offices, how we design and build out interiors, how we operate day-by-day and how we select vendors. At all levels, we aim to conserve natural resources, minimise waste and prevent environmental pollution. We are transitioning to renewable energy as a step toward reducing our total carbon footprint. We purchase 100% renewable power for our most prominent sites, including our EMEA headquarters in the U.K. Gartner has also leveraged the cloud to prioritise clean technology: (1) Continued growth in our utilisation of virtual collaboration tools (2) Increasing our services/applications in the cloud to reduce physical hardware (3) In 2020, consolidation efforts resulted in removing 1,653 servers from the Gartner data centre environment (4) Using the scaling capabilities of the cloud to turn off or scale sown nonproduction environments when not in use (5) Partnering with cloud vendors powered using renewable energy
Covid-19 recovery

Covid-19 recovery

Since the pandemic hit, Gartner has been adapting swiftly to changes to we can empower associates, clients and the community to emerge from the pandemic stronger and more resilient than ever. We have been supporting in the following ways: (1) We accelerated the creation of new, highly relevant content for clients across every function on topics such as pandemic planning, cost optimisation, business continuity, digital business transformation, managing an effective, remote workforce and more. (2) We launched our complimentary COVID-19 Resource Centre (gartner.com/en/insights/coronavirus), available to the general public, which offers free guidance for the business community on how to respond, manage and prepare for the pandemic’s global impact. It features relevant, frequently updated content for all leaders — IT, HR, supply chain, finance and more — for each stage of the pandemic, from initial response to recover and renewal. Anyone can read an article, watch a webinar, listen to a podcast or download a piece of free research without revealing their identity. This initiative mirrors a similar move on the client site to make a large set of coronavirus content available to all clients, regardless of their entitlements. (3) We pivoted to virtual conferences to provide a flexible way to accelerate learning without the need to travel (4) We facilitated peer cohorts with leaders across the enterprise so they could share with each other how they were reacting to the crisis.
Tackling economic inequality

Tackling economic inequality

Gartner’s Supplier Diversity Program brings additional small and diverse businesses into our global supply base. An inclusive procurement strategy identifies potential suppliers, promotes competition and generates economic opportunities for diverse communities. To qualify, a business must be at least 51% owned and operated by an individual or group that is part of a traditionally underrepresented or disadvantaged group. Gartner’s programme promotes the user of suppliers with classifications including disability-owned, LGBTQ-owned, minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned businesses, and small businesses. Our approach is coordinated globally and includes our long involvement in and compliance with the Small Business Program with the U.S. Government and the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Program in South Africa. This international perspective means that, in the U.K. we reap the benefits of global best practice and expanded awareness of cutting edge trends. Across all supplier relationships we require compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct to ensure our partners share our focus on ethics and fair practices. As a $4.2 Billion Dollar (USD) company, we are proud that our current programme spend amounts to 2.4% of our total addressable spend — a substantial sum. Gartner’s efforts provide value for money for buyers by reinforcing our overall DEI activities and commitment to social impact. Research has shown that more diverse corporate communities are better able to respond to disruption and change, meaning these efforts help support our stable delivery to clients for the long term. In the words of our CFO: “Different perspectives, ideas and experiences are what make our company great. Working with a diverse group of qualified suppliers furthers our commitment to create an inclusive work environment.” Ensuring our supply chain and associate body both represent a diverse culture, we ensure our teams empathise with the scenarios faced by clients and stakeholders.
Equal opportunity

Equal opportunity

We have implemented a governing model to tackle inequality in employment, skills, and pay by mobilising our people and our communities: (1) Our DEI Council drives activity across all business units and at all levels. (2) Our DEI Centre of Excellence establishes goals against key metrics driving accountability. (3) Our DEI Steering Committee develops global/local initiatives based on greatest impact. (4) Our DEI Talent Acquisition Council involves recruiters from our 100 locations globally to drive best practice in developing our diverse workforce. Our further efforts include regular unconscious bias training; the provision of accommodations for physical and mental health including caregiver support and mental health resources; Employee Resource Groups fostering an inclusive workplace. Our public-facing DEI Resource Centre (gartner.com/en/human-resources/insights/diversity-equity-inclusion) includes research — e.g., the “Advancing DEI” podcast — to help organisations accelerate DEI. The 300 research reports on Gartner.com substantiate our position as a leading source of expertise in the creation of such programmes, as well as fuelling our own activities. We also use a variety of internal programmes and external partnerships to diversify candidate pools and tackle inequality: (1) Gartner Women & Returners in Sales Discovery — Providing tailored professional development to help professionals who have taken career breaks return to rewarding careers. (2) Gartner Veteran Fellowship — Helping translate military experience into corporate success. (3) Developing the Next Generation of Business Leaders — Giving students and recent graduates opportunities to learn through internships and events. (4) WomenHack — Partnered with WomenHack, an organisation dedicated to empowering women to pursue careers in the technology industry. (5) St. Mary’s University Be SMART Project — Providing historically underrepresented students with access to mentoring, internships, webinars training. Gartner was recognised as “Internship Provider of the Year” and for “Outstanding Employer Contribution” by St Mary’s University at their 2021 awards.
Wellbeing

Wellbeing

Gartner’s success relies on the effectiveness of its people. We support the wellbeing of our people through major investments in benefits, guidance, escalation processes, and leadership. Within the U.K., associates can access: (1) The Employee Assistance Programme — a confidential service run by LifeWorks providing online chat, therapy sessions with mental health professionals, and unlimited telephone consultation. This is also open to associates’ family members (2) LifeSpeak Digital Wellness — An online library of videos, podcasts, factsheets and articles curated by wellbeing professionals to target the full spectrum of life challenges. This includes real-time web chat to guide associates with specific questions (3) Physical Wellness — Each associate has access to ergonomic assessments to ensure their working environment is safe. Similarly, as well as our healthcare insurance for associates, we also arrange support with wellness products and discounts (4) Employee Resource Groups — ERGs are associate-driven voluntary communities designed to give associates a like-minded group to support them and help them source guidance and wisdom from peers who understand their circumstances (5) Financial Resources — As well as the guidance provided via LifeWorks, there are also grants available to support associates through emergencies and exceptional events. An associate can receive a grant between $500-$5,000 twice annually. Giving back is an integral part of our culture and ensures Gartner associates are part of wider communities. We encourage associates to follow their personal passions by contributing to their communities however they choose to do so. Through the Gartner Gives programme, we empower associates to support causes they care most deeply about and drive a positive, lasting impact. This includes matching associates’ charitable contributions, supporting volunteering opportunities, staging the “Community Impact Speaker Series” events, encouraging non-profit board service; and staging in-house charity drives.
