Onboarding and offboarding

Getting started
Whilst comprehensive documentation and training materials are plenty and available free of charge through the internet, we generally recommend buyers purchase a small number of consulting and training days to get a fast ROI on the software. This would typically include the development of an initial report or dashboard requirement, designed to be a high-quality showcase of the capabilities of the service and serve as a source for reverse engineering and learning for future projects, as well as classroom-based training complete with manuals and electronic content.

Following this initial engagement, many of our customers become self sufficient and only call upon our services for occasional support or for help kicking off a new project. We are also able to offer more comprehensive services to build a whole suite of reports, help develop internal capabilities through continuous improvement training and build of a Centre of Excellence.

Users can request a full copy of their data at the end of their contract which they could then restore to a local server if required.

As stated in our Terms of Service, once a Site is terminated all data, content and related metadata will be removed and is not recoverable.

API
Yes
What users can and can't do using the API
Several APIs available to automate or enhance aspects of the standard platform: REST, Extract, Document, Javascript, Web Data Connector and Extensions. A small number of specific functions are not relevant (or available) when using the Tableau Cloud Platform as they relate to the Tableau Server Platform instead. These differences are clearly identified in the online help pages. For example, search online for 'Tableau online help API Reference'. The REST API can be used for managing users, groups and sites, updating workbooks or datasources and Integrating Tableau content with a custom app or portal. Extract API can be used to create data extracts that improve performance and provide offline access to data. Document API is used to create and deploy templates or migrate workbooks from test to production data sources. Javascript API for embedding Tableau into custom web applications. Allows a bi-directional communication between Tableau and the host application. Web Data Connector: connect to any data via HTTP/HTTPS, providing an HTML interface to end-user, storing into data extracts. Also allows automatic refreshes and authentication. Extensions API can open up a range of capabilities from 'write-back' to custom interface options and bi-directional communication between Tableau and guest application.

Customisation available
Yes
Description of customisation
The purpose of the Tableau Platform is to allow customers to create their own analytics, reports and dashboards, each of which is customised to meet specific needs. Automation can be applied to the platform through the use of APIs. In addition the interface can be adapted and tailored to reflect customer branding. At an individual level the users can personalise their experience through the use of favourites, selected 'home pages', custom filter settings on views, etc.

Scaling

Independence of resources
The Tableau Cloud Platform uses technical infrastructure hosted and maintained in their EU (Dublin) data centre, and constantly monitor activity to ensure that peak periods are supported by appropriate levels of processing power so that slow-down does not occur as a result of increased activity. Tableau publish a daily (historic) report of service availability and planned maintenance at www.trust.tableau.com

Information security policies and processes
Tableau customers, employees, and business partners trust Tableau to responsibly protect the data and systems under their care. The Tableau Information Security (InfoSec) Team are responsible for creating and maintaining the policies and systems that ensure this is done in line with our Information Security Policy, Employee Handbooks and Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.

Operational security

Configuration and change management standard
Supplier-defined controls
Configuration and change management approach
The assumption has been taken that this question does not relate to the internal process and operation of the company. In terms of the release of software updates to the Tableau Cloud Platform, Tableau now operates a cadence where updates are made available roughly 4 times per year, on a quarterly basis. For the hosted solution the updates are made directly without significant downtime or loss of service to the customer.
Vulnerability management type
Supplier-defined controls
Vulnerability management approach
The Tableau Security team cares deeply about the security of their products and the data that Tableau customers entrust to them. They will thoroughly investigate any reported vulnerability. Once a vulnerability is fully investigated and its content addressed, Tableau and The Information Lab will work with you to disclose the vulnerability in a way that acknowledges your work and protects our customers.

All security-related notifications will be announced to customers via the Security Bulletins community page: https://community.tableau.com/community/security-bulletins. This page also details our response to Internet-wide vulnerabilities that impact Tableau products, release notes about security bug fixes and disclosed vulnerabilities.
Protective monitoring type
Supplier-defined controls
Protective monitoring approach
In relation to Tableau Cloud Platform, there is no specific Protective Monitoring standard in place. Where highly-sensitive, high-impact customer data is concerned our recommendation would be to implement the Tableau Server (Hybrid-Cloud) Platform where the customer's own security standards and policies will apply.
Incident management type
Supplier-defined controls
Incident management approach
For internal incident management, both The Information Lab and Tableau uses an industry-leading ticket-tracking platform that conforms to the ITIL standard. Customers who purchase via The Information Lab have access to both of these support channels.

Fighting climate change

We've partnered with Carbon Intelligence (Accenture) to monitor our carbon footprint for several years, and with their guidance, we've gained insights into our emissions breakdown. It's likely that our emissions are distributed as follows: approximately 3-5% from Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions like those from air conditioning), roughly 20% from Scope 2 emissions (related to electricity consumption in our office spaces), and the majority, around 75%, from Scope 3 emissions, which includes factors like business travel, commuting, and purchased goods and services.
As a remote-first company, we actively promote remote work among our employees and encourage them to minimise travel unless absolutely necessary.
In addition, through our TIL+ program, we've contributed several pro-bono consulting engagements to organisations dedicated to raising awareness about climate change. For instance, we've supported Health In Harmony, a non-profit committed to advancing human health and environmental protection through sustainable healthcare and conservation practices.

Covid-19 recovery

The Information Lab promotes remote working wherever possible; we continue to work flexibly with our customers where necessary to maintain the provision of services.

Tackling economic inequality

We have an inclusive recruitment policy that does not impose restrictions based on a candidate's educational background or achievements. Our recruitment process at The Information Lab is task-focused, and we do not consider a candidate's employment history or educational qualifications in our hiring programmes.
We actively seek to recruit from a diverse range of underrepresented groups through partnerships with industry organisations, aiming to address inequality within our company.

Equal opportunity

Through regular compensation reviews, The Information Lab proactively ensure equal opportunity and advocates for standardised, equitable pay across all available roles. In 2023, our female workforce constituted 39% of our team, exceeding the UK tech sector average by 20%. Additionally, approximately 28% of our workforce are from ethnic minority backgrounds, compared to the UK tech sector average of around 15%. We actively encourage applications from minority groups for available senior positions.

Wellbeing

At The Information Lab, we prioritise the health and well-being of our workforce and have implemented a range of supportive measures. This includes offering exercise programs tailored to various fitness levels, providing dedicated certified mental health first aiders for immediate support, and facilitating access to counselling and specialised external mental health support services. We regularly host mental health awareness events and workshops to promote open conversations and reduce stigma. Additionally, we actively encourage our employees to utilise flexible work arrangements and take advantage of available leave to balance work and personal life commitments. Recognising the importance of staff welfare, we maintain a steadfast commitment to creating a supportive workplace culture where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive both physically and mentally.
