Equal opportunity
Nova recognises that inequality for minority groups, particularly economic inequality, makes it difficult to create equality of opportunity. Income inequality means some will enter the workforce better prepared than others. People with few assets or from minorities can find it harder to access the first small steps to larger opportunities, such as an advanced degree. While this project will require skilled individuals, Nova is an equal opportunities employer who acknowledges its broader responsibility and ensures equal opportunities for minority groups delivering any Nova contract.
It is Nova policy that no person acting on our behalf shall discriminate in any situation against another individual or group, directly or indirectly, because of sex, marital status, age, disability, colour, race, nationality, citizenship, ethnic or national origin, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. Nova endorses the principle that the workforce at each location should reflect, as far as reasonably possible, the composition of the local community. These principles apply to recruitment, selection, training, promotion, pay and benefits, performance appraisal procedures and selection for redundancy in addition to all terms and conditions of employment. We feel a responsibility to our employees and society to create opportunities by identifying and tackling inequality through employment, skills and pay.
Skills. Nova employs a Competency Management Tool (CMT) to understand individual skills. Each employee is funded to develop their skills and is given additional leave to undertake this training.
Graduate programme and apprenticeships. A specific Development Plan has been created for graduate employees. We are also looking at Apprentice Training to grow our future workforce and developing those from minority groups.
Open recruitment. Nova actively encourages open recruitment.
STEM. Nova has several STEM Ambassadors who actively go into schools and universities to talk about engineering opportunities.
Philanthropy. Nova has installed a Philanthropic subcommittee to donate and physically support developing communities.Wellbeing
Nova understands the value of wellbeing for staff, whether physical, mental or financial. With committed, hard-working staff we understand the pressures they face and are committed to ensuring staff wellbeing.
Following on from previous best practice activities Nova recently launched its Employee Wellbeing Calendar based around ‘The Four Pillars’ of Employee Wellbeing:
• Move – Looking after your physical wellbeing.
• Mind – Taking care of your mental wellbeing.
• Munch – Sustaining a healthy, nutritional diet.
• Money – Ensuring you are financially stable.
A series of trainings, activities and management interventions have improved staff wellbeing and are enhanced by supporting information on our Engage platform. A current focus was heart health with various activities being organised to encourage good heart health practices as well as raising funds for the British Heart Foundation. Other practical elements have including winter driving training, mental health awareness training, tracking (and reduction) of hours worked and supplying fruit into Nova’s offices.
Nova has several methods of providing mental health awareness training, from internal trainings for mental health first aiders to instructor qualifications for our wellbeing leads. Over the last 12 months there have been four mental health awareness trainings at Nova group meetings. These have 90%+ attendance across the company and Nova intends to achieve 100% attendance each year on mental health awareness trainings for all staff.
Minimising risk to delivery. While Nova genuinely cares about the wellbeing of its staff it also understands that physically and mentally fit staff, who are eating and sleeping well, feel valued and can identify and avoid risks to their wellbeing will be in a far better position to serve our clients’ need and maintain that capability. By building strong, integrated communities, and encouraging others to do so, we reduce risk to delivery and maximise client confidence.
