Fighting climate change
Certus has adoped SMART organisational targets which focus on the deployment of environmental policies and practices designed to reduce emissions and shrink and/or neutralise our carbon footprint. The key polices are outlined as follows:
1 – Recycle
While we encourage all Certus staff to operate in a “paperless environment” and avoid printing unless absolutely necessary, any office waste that is recyclable must be recycled
2 – Use of Recycled Materials
We use recycled materials wherever available, including recycled paper products for office supplies.
3 – Use of Sustainable Suppliers
As an SME, Certus does not have an extensive supply chain. Nevertheless, we include environmental requirements in our supply contracts and include powers to audit suppliers for compliance.
4 – Switching to Fully Electric Vehicles
As an organisation, we are making positive steps towards the adoption of fully electric vehicles. Several of our staff are already leasing fully electric company cars and we are disposing of conventional petrol and diesel company vehicles.
5 – Use of the Virtual Office and Online Meetings
Flexible working has, and will continue to be, our preferred way of working, subject to client requirements. In this way, we will continue to save on staff commuting times and travel expenses, as well as avoiding unnecessary travel emissions.
Certus leases a small office in London, which is reserved for activities that are most productive when carried out face-to-face. All green policies adopted for homeworking are applied equally in the office. Our office space only uses electricity from ‘green energy’ certified renewable sources.
6 – Use of Public Transport
If business trips or events must be in person, we ask Certus staff to use public transport to avoid unnecessary travel emissions, especially where business travel involves single-passenger journeys.Tackling economic inequality
Certus’ policy framework to address economic inequality covers the following areas:
1. Living Wage Implementation: Ensuring that all employees, including entry-level positions, are paid a living wage that allows them to cover their basic needs such as housing, food, healthcare, and transportation.
2. Equal Pay for Equal Work: Committing to pay equity by ensuring that compensation is based on the responsibilities and qualifications of the job rather than factors like gender, race, or ethnicity.
3. Promotion of Diversity and Inclusion: Fostering a workplace culture that values diversity and actively promotes inclusivity. Implementing recruitment and promotion practices that provide equal opportunities for advancement regardless of background.
4. Education and Training Programs: Offering education and training programs to enhance the skills and capabilities of employees, particularly those from marginalized or disadvantaged backgrounds.
5. Employee Benefits and Support Services: Providing comprehensive benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave to ensure the well-being of employees.
6. Community Engagement and Investment: Engaging with the local community by supporting initiatives that aim to alleviate economic inequality, such as job training programs, affordable housing projects, or small business development initiatives.
7. Supplier Diversity: Promoting diversity in our supply chain by actively seeking out and doing business with minority-owned, women-owned, and other underrepresented suppliers.
8. Transparency and Accountability: Maintaining transparency in decision-making processes related to compensation, hiring, and promotions.
9. Continuous Evaluation and Improvement: Regularly evaluating the effectiveness of the policy measures implemented and making adjustments as needed.
10. Leadership Commitment: Demonstrating visible leadership commitment to tackling economic inequality by incorporating these principles into the company's mission, values, and strategic objectives. Leading by example and championing these efforts both internally and externally.Equal opportunity
We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment in any part of Certus’ operations. We are fully committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment. Our Equal Opportunities policy covers all employees, consultants, officers, contractors and job applicants.
There are characteristics relevant to an individual that must not unfairly be considered (if accounted for at all) in decisions relating to any aspect of their working life. These ‘protected characteristics’ are as follows: Age, Disability, Gender Reassignment, Marital/Civil Partnership status, Pregnancy/Maternity, Race, Religion/Belief, Sex and Sexual Orientation
Certus will not tolerate the following behaviour by anyone within our business:
a. Direct discrimination...
when someone with a protected characteristic is treated less favourably than somebody else has or would have been in identical circumstances.
b. Indirect discrimination...
when a group of people with one of the protected characteristics is disadvantaged by a provision, criterion or practice that is applied to all staff.
c. Harassment...
covers hostile, humiliating, degrading, intimidating or similarly offensive treatment or conditions to which an individual with one or more protected characteristics is subjected. Any such actions deprive an individual of their dignity and violate them. We draw no distinction between actions that may be labelled as ‘joking’ and not intended to cause offence, and those that may have been more direct and premeditated in their delivery.
d. Victimisation
This covers the situation where:
a. a worker has complained of discrimination (or harassment),
b. or has supported a fellow worker in making a complaint about these concerns,
and has then suffered reprisals from others.
Overall responsibility for the effective implementation and operation of the Equal Opportunities policy lies with the Certus board of directors. We take all allegations of breach and any breaches that we discover very seriously, and this will be thoroughly investigated.Wellbeing
Certus’ policy framework for wellbeing covers the following areas:
1. Flexible Work Arrangements: Offering flexible work options such as remote work, flexible hours, or compressed workweeks to accommodate employees' personal and family needs. Ensuring that workloads are manageable and providing resources for effective time management.
2. Mental Health Support: Promoting a culture of openness and destigmatising mental health issues by encouraging dialogue and support among employees.
3. Physical Health Initiatives: Implementing wellness programs that promote physical health, such as gym memberships, fitness classes, or wellness challenges. Encouraging regular breaks, stretching exercises, and ergonomic workstations to prevent workplace injuries and discomfort.
4. Work-Life Balance: Encouraging work-life balance by setting clear boundaries around working hours and expectations. Discouraging overtime work except in exceptional circumstances, and ensuring that employees have sufficient time off to recharge and spend time with family and friends.
5. Stress Management: Encouraging managers to recognise signs of burnout and supporting employees in managing their workload.
6. Healthy Workplace Culture: Fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture based on trust, respect, and collaboration. Encouraging open communication, celebrating achievements, and recognising the contributions of employees to create a supportive work environment.
7. Workplace Safety: Prioritising workplace safety by providing training on safety protocols, maintaining a clean and hazard-free environment, and regularly inspecting equipment and facilities.
8. Professional Development: Investing in the professional development of employees by offering opportunities for training, skill-building workshops, and career advancement.
9. Feedback Mechanisms: Establishing feedback mechanisms such as employee surveys, suggestion boxes, or regular check-ins to assess the effectiveness of well-being initiatives and gathering input from employees on areas for improvement.
