- How the training service works
- BBD's approach to training is based on creating an embedded team to build a hands-on learning experience for the user and client teams. This learning includes peer learning, formal training, and informal sharing sessions. Our goal is to transfer and embed our knowledge of technology and process innovation into the core team at our clients. Our experts are skilled at helping to create long-running, sustainable, agile teams and we tailor the training needs based on the unique situation of each client. Our engineers are grounded in the hands-on learning approach and experienced in creating peer learning and team learning environments, they can thus nurture this environment for our clients.

- How the setup or migration service works
-
BBD can assist with the full cloud migration journey. This includes modernising applications, transforming architecture, initial set-up, and creating new operating model and team cultures. We have developed a set of in-house accelerators to tackle common use cases faced in microservice deployments on containerised platforms. The set includes a boilerplate chassis for common concerns based on open-source frameworks and tools, and a fully-fledged event-driven microservice framework. Each accelerator is custom-built to run and leverage container-based platforms.
These accelerators have been battle-tested at many of our clients. As part of our service package, our accelerators are provided at no cost to you, allowing development teams to focus on the business value while ramping up delivery and adoption.
The use of accelerators is in our experience the best means of deployment success, but in some cases delivery and adoption will require a very bespoke solution. We use our deep experience in building bespoke software solutions to ensure that the migration is optimal for each project and suits the needs of each individual client - Setup or migration service is for specific cloud services

Our solution is tested with the buyer/client to ensure that performance and automation are in line with expectations as set in the project design.
Testing and approval are included in the deployment process and both the client team and the engineering team have input into ensuring that delivery is of the highest standard including performance testing, continuous integration and delivery into production environments at scale. We are happy to work with a clients existing quality management system (QMS) where appropriate.

Fighting climate change
At BBD, we recognize the importance of environmental sustainability and are committed to minimizing our impact on the environment. We are committed to responsible environmental stewardship, resource conservation, and pollution prevention. We continuously strive to minimise any negative impact on the environment with a grassroots approach. We believe real environmental change comes from action and from instilling a sense of responsibility through strong internal environmental systems in all stakeholders including employees, management, clients, and suppliers.
We will actively promote sustainable resource management throughout our operations. This includes sourcing environmentally friendly materials and products, favouring suppliers with strong environmental credentials, and encouraging the use of renewable and recyclable resources.
We will strive to improve energy efficiency across our facilities, processes, and transportation. This includes implementing energy-saving measures, investing in energy-efficient technologies, and promoting awareness among employees to encourage responsible energy usage.
We are committed to addressing climate change and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. We will set targets for emissions reduction, regularly monitor our carbon footprint, and implement measures to increase energy efficiency and transition to low-carbon alternatives. We will also explore opportunities to contribute to carbon offset projects and support renewable energy initiatives.
We will collaborate with stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, and the local community, to promote environmental sustainability. We will engage in open dialogue, share knowledge and best practices, and encourage the adoption of sustainable behaviours and technologies.
We are committed to continuously improving our environmental performance. We will set measurable goals, monitor our progress, and regularly review and update this policy to reflect advances in technology, changes in environmental risks, and emerging best practices.
We will communicate our environmental commitments and progress to our stakeholders through regular reporting and transparency. We will strive to provide accessible and accurate information about our environmental performance, initiatives, and achievements.Tackling economic inequality
During our 40 years in business, we have been involved in various initiatives and spearheaded outreach programmes that includes setting up computer labs at schools in rural areas, donating to charities and NGOs / NPOs, contributed to learnerships, given lectures for budding yet previously disadvantaged youths, hosted workshops, and helped equipped educators with the skills necessary to teach the world-changers of tomorrow
From a supply chain perspective, we provide opportunities for small businesses and start-ups to establish themselves, grow and compete with larger players in the market through our Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) initiatives to enable us to foster a diverse supply chain and an inclusive marketplace to ultimately contribute to a growing economy. This programme provides support ranging from access to integration opportunities to work on BBD projects, to development loans to facilitate operational cashflow, preferential payment, short-term payment periods, business incubation guidance and access to office space.
Our community outreach includes donations and support to NPOs such as Afrika Tikkun, Girls & Boys Town and KidzHub, as well as various schools in far-flung and often rural areas across South Africa. We are also invested in tackling the gender divide prominent in the tech landscape by supporting and facilitating various learning programmes and workshops run by GirlCode, and are a founding partner of WeThinkCode_ (WTC), a tuition-free programme educating the next generation of software engineers. Additionally, we offer a bursary programme aimed at supporting and growing talented students working towards a career in selected IT fields by offering access to the financial means necessary to compete their studies. To encourage more females to enter the industry, and help promote gender equality in the tech space, BBD has partnered with the likes of GirlCode, Pink Codrs Africa and Umuzi, running workshops, offering learnerships and providing bursaries.Equal opportunity
BBD creates a culture that celebrates, encourages and supports the promotion of talented and passionate people regardless of who they are and where they come from. We are proud to be highlighting the vital conversation with a recent #BreaktheBias and #EmbraceEquity programme, themes which highlight the importance of challenging biases and misconceptions in the interest of creating a more inclusive, equal and gender-equal world. We would champion these values throughout the duration of this contract.
From equal hiring practices to grassroot initiatives geared at widening the skills pool, we are proud to be doing our part to ensure an inclusive and sustainable future for the industry. We believe that talent can come from anywhere. Alongside our community initiatives, BBD seeks to meet talented young students at critical junctures in their skills development journey, offering training, real-world working experience, financial support where needed and exposure to our wealth of industry knowledge.
For the past two years we have sponsored learnership programmes with Dynamic DNA, catering for both disabled and able-bodied students. These learnerships have seen at least 20 students from each group each year. The goal of the programme is to expose more students to the possibility of a career in technology, no matter their physical limitations. In this way we are encouraging a more inclusive future for the software industry.
To address the shortage of skilled female coders, we offer a learnership in partnership with charities that focus on supporting un- and under-employed young women to become junior full-stack engineers. To do our part to create an inclusive environment that extends beyond our ranks and into the technology sector at large, we are committed to fair and equal hiring practices, grassroot initiatives geared at widening the skills pool, and other community programmes that seek to find and nurture talented individuals.Wellbeing
The well-being of our employees is paramount to BBD and having navigated the pandemic, this confirmed the realisation that both and physical and mental health plays a huge part in maintaining a healthy balanced workforce.
Evidence of this can be seen during the pandemic where we made available various online resources and sessions to boost mental health and wellness including yoga classes, social gatherings and quiz nights to help those in isolated situations to feel connected and also teachings from a chiropractor on good physical health and speaker slots from those with experience navigating tough situations. BBD scored 93.2% and was awarded a Best Company Platinum Seal in Deloitte’s 2022 Best Company survey.
BBD champions physical activities whether that be access to sports teams and encouraging participation in community-run company leagues, chess teams, or cycling teams – all are encouraged. This spring, all our employees are encouraged to participate in the Wings for life race that supports Spinal Cord research.
Working from home and the hybrid model that we promote, when possible, means that close attention must be paid to the well-being of our employees. We encourage informal communication lines with managers and with peers and then our more structured mentorship is key to ensuring our staff are being supported, listened to, and that their needs around growth, training and their aspirations for advancement are being considered.
Through the demonstration of our social responsibility, we encourage employees to get involved and give back. With the people and projects we choose to support whether that be students or entrepreneurs, we always have our employees at the heart of these decisions and our choice of involvement always has our people in mind. Working with the charities Techshecan.com and the sunninghilltrust.org, we demonstrate our commitment to education and the relief of hardship.
