Information Security Policy, Acceptable Use Policy and Security Breach Procedure. We have Cyber Essentials plus and we submit an annual DSP toolkit. A security breach would be reported to the Head of Information Governance and the process led by her as Data Protection Officer. HIG would then escalate to the SIRO (Senior Information Risk Owner) if it reaches a certain impact level. If it reaches the next level an emergency response group would be formed including the SIRO, CEO and Executive Director of the affected Division (this is where it is likely to be reportable).
As part of the DSP toolkit, RCPCH do an annual audit randomly selecting and auditing staff compliance with key Information Governance policies.
Operational security
- Configuration and change management standard
- Conforms to a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v3.0 or SSAE-16 / ISAE 3402
- Configuration and change management approach
-
We use git and GitHub version control to retain all source code history. Change requests are reviewed by another team member before integrating. Changes are tested in a staging environment before promoting to production. Deployments are tracked as pull requests into separate git branches for each environment.
Security impact is assessed through a combination of review and automated security scanning tools (eg GitHub Dependabot) before promoting to live. - Vulnerability management type
- Supplier-defined controls
- Vulnerability management approach
- We use a combination of code review, logs review, automated dependency vulnerability notifications, automated penetration testing and regular manual penetration testing. At system design time we produce a security impact assessment. We deploy critical patches within one week, accelerating to one day where possible and appropriate. We gather information about threats from GitHub Dependabot and Intruder (our third party automated pen test system).
- Protective monitoring type
- Supplier-defined controls
- Protective monitoring approach
- We identify compromises through a combination of manual log review, automated pen testing and reactive investigation from manual pen testing. We respond by terminating unauthorised access, investigating the extent of the compromise and then notify relevant stakeholders through our information governance program (eg suppliers, contract stakeholders and if required or appropriate individuals). We review all security incidents to improve our procedures and monitoring and implement these changes as a priority. We acknowledge incidents within one day, accelerating where appropriate and produce a report on our response within one week
- Incident management type
- Supplier-defined controls
- Incident management approach
- Incident management is co-ordinated between the Lead Software Developer, Head of Information Governance and Executive Director of Digital. We focus on addressing the immediate impacts of the issue and communicating appropriately before moving on to a review process and changing our processes based on our learnings. We have pre-defined processes for common events eg security breach disclosure. Users report incidents directly to their project contacts at the RCPCH or to a publicly available security email. We provide written incident reports to stakeholders and publish public versions wherever possible with appropriate details redacted.
Secure development
- Approach to secure software development best practice
- Independent review of processes (for example CESG CPA Build Standard, ISO/IEC 27034, ISO/IEC 27001 or CSA CCM v3.0)

Fighting climate change
RCPCH expressed its commitment to making the College a net zero organisation by 2040 in its 2021-2024 strategy. As a Royal College in the field of paediatrics, the impact of climate change on children and young people is one of the biggest public health challenges and in 2020 the College joined others in declaring a climate emergency. The very nature of the SaaS tool - facilitating the use of digital growth charts - is to replace the predominantly paper red books with a digital version. This contract makes available digital software introducing a paper-free version to the health and medical space. By influencing staff and communities we are contributing to decreasing the environmental impact of paper products and their transportation. During the execution of the contract, by nature of the software application there will be less travel in the delivery by staff and customers, and online / virtual meetings will replace face to face meetings.Covid-19 recovery
This contract will support especially hard to reach communities and families to facilitate the monitoring of growth especially after the medium to longer term impact on children in lockdown and put them on the road to recovery. It will reduce the demand on health services by minimising the time spent on paper and manual based processes calculation as the calculation and chart tool will make processes seamless.Tackling economic inequality
As this contract is aimed at families, primarily children and young people, the aim is to improve health outcomes in communities and potentially help reduce barriers to future employment especially in deprived areas.
