Fighting climate change
Burendo harnesses GreenOps principles to reduce environmental footprints in service delivery. We’re proud to have achieved carbon negative status well ahead of our original 2031 target. We’ll collaborate with Buyers to:
Consider solution design through an environmental lens, building in energy optimisation at the outset e.g. right-sizing resources without over provisioning, automated monitoring that shuts down idle resources, developing code that requires less processing power to run.
Look for opportunities to maximise Buyers’ cloud adoption (e.g. server consolidation) to avoid wasted resources and drive ROI.
Recommend cloud providers with strong environmental sustainability commitments e.g. leveraging renewable energy in data centres., evaluating their Power and Carbon Usage Effectiveness scores and Energy Reuse Factors to ensure overall, not just localised (Buyer) reduction in impact.
Reduce e-waste impact by engaging environmentally accredited recycling specialists and identifying educational institutions, community ventures etc. to receive retired kit donation. We’ve implemented this already in Leeds with positive outcomes.
Harness virtual communication/collaboration tools to eliminate unnecessary travel and using public transportation over individual care use for essential travel.
Volunteer time and/or sponsoring local (to Burendo and Buyers) environmental projects e.g. tree planting, riverbank clearance, repairing broken tech (e.g. for VCSEs), food redistribution.
Facilitate sustainability workshops for Buyers’ teams, local SMEs and VCSEs to share tips and drive best practice that support/accelerate a sustainability agenda. We’ll draw from our own experiences to highlight opportunities to reduce energy usage, improve waste management and educate/influence teams to play their part.Tackling economic inequality
Burendo will address ‘Tackling Economic Inequality’ through our Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) community and our supply chain strategy. Specifically, through the course of G-Cloud 14 services, we will:
Continue to leverage our relationships with universities (e.g. we’re members of Leeds Beckett University’s Advisory Board) to ensure tech skills are promoted in Higher Education.
Work with local schools (to Burendo and Buyers) via the Ahead Partnership and Career Ready to support young people facing economic inequality to develop employability skills, and therefore access to skilled careers.
Work with Women in Tech to collaborate on/deliver events aimed at skills sharing and widening opportunities.
Offer placements at the Burendo Academy to create entry into a tech career and facilitate skills development for talented young people who are typically excluded.
Create skills-sharing opportunities for all stakeholders, including suppliers and clients, via regular events e.g. lunch-and-learns in business analysis, DEI strategy building and cloud skills.
Increase supply chain resilience and capacity by continuing to increase our procurement spend with SMEs. We target 5% increase year-on-year, including the engagement of at least one VCSE.
Support SMEs and VCSEs’ (suppliers/partners/Buyers) growth by sharing our maturity journey and resources (office space, retired tech etc.) to support them to reduce their costs and environmental impact.Equal opportunity
Burendo is an equal opportunities employer. Evidencing our commitment, we’re proud to reference: 50% female representation on our operations board; roll-out of our new industry-leading family-friendly policies (maternity, paternity and adoption) and forward-thinking practices to support employees through pregnancy loss, menopause and domestic violence; a participation in the Ukraine Partnership Scheme; and a full Diversity Equality & Inclusion (DE&I) events calendar (e.g. neurodiversity, Pride, diverse cultures and practice) that drives awareness and removes unconscious bias. Specifically, via our G-Cloud 14 services, we’ll drive equal opportunities by:
Ongoing practice of fair and inclusive recruitment and making necessary arrangements to ensure people are not limited by protected characteristics, (e.g. providing literacy software for dyslexic colleagues) to ensure Buyers benefit from the best and brightest minds.
Working with Buyers to create a shared learning experience that fosters a one-team approach, including sharing knowledge/content, opening our training/awareness sessions to Buyer’s teams and/or hosting joint DE&I events.
Championing women in tech. We’ll leverage our relationship with Ahead Partnerships to connect Buyers to opportunities to be involved in e.g. ‘Women of the Future’ and mentoring up-and-coming talent. We’ll explore with Buyers the option of opening limited spaces within our internal mentoring programme to provide tech sector development coaching for their female employees.
Leverage our partnerships with Leeds Trinity University and Career Ready to enhance new and diverse talent within the Tech industry and support social mobility via internships, work experience placements and training academies. We’ll utilise these and similar relationships to connect the Buyers to similar opportunities, creating pathways for future talent.
Share our inclusive policy journey and specialist expertise with Buyers to support them to review and enhance their own employee offerings. We’ll share insights and key learnings, facilitate workshops and focus groups, and assist employee engagement and communication.
