Discoveries are designed to align with the GOV.UK Service Manual definition, deliver outputs aligned with the Service Standard, and ensure readiness for assessment. In cases where a service may not need to meet Service Standard requirements or undergo assessment, these remain useful guidance, ensuring the phase delivers valuable learnings, artefacts and outcomes.
We plan the phase right-to-left, starting from outcomes and agreeing appropriate activities to deliver those, as well as determining the right level of depth / granularity, whilst considering dependencies, generally aiming to timebox activities within the recommended 4-8 week period. We determine proposed team shape based on the roles, capabilities and capacity required to deliver the outcomes within the timebox, although in specific contexts of complexity or ambiguity, an extended timeframe may be necessary.
A typical team shape for a discovery is likely to include user researchers, a service designer, product manager, business analysts, technical lead and delivery manager, along with other roles depending on context. This team can be wholly led and staffed by us, or can be a ‘rainbow team’, incorporating Civil Servants, contractors or SMEs sourced from other partners. - Planning service works with specific services

Your team members will be paired up with Thoughtworks team members in similar roles. This allows them to benefit from shared experience and domain knowledge in a positive environment where they can ask questions and learn on the job.
This collaborative learning can be supported and supplemented through formal and informal methods where applicable. These can include workshops, literature and “bite size” Zoom sessions.

Your solution will have our quality approach embedded into its delivery. Quality is incorporated across the agile software development lifecycle and is the whole delivery team’s responsibility. Minimising error and maximising quality, we use automation extensively for technical cloud migration and testing, ensuring repeatability and removing bias.
This is true of the discovery phase of a programme, where we include understanding of various quality metrics that any service and solution should meet, as well as assuring the quality of artefacts produced and recommendations made.

Support is provided during service development during working hours by the delivery team as part of the overall DevOps approach to the engagement, with response times to be agreed during initial engagement. We are happy to explore any additional needs at the outset of the service.
