Fighting climate change
NHS SCW prides itself in being a nationally established leader supporting NHS customers to develop and implement Green Plans across all business areas, including digital and data, clinical service delivery, travel and transport, and support services. Knowing that every £1 invested in the NHS delivers £4 in the economy drives SCW to deliver best-in-class support to customers and social value to communities they serve. A recent example is adoption of digital texting in our Children Health Information Service. Texts have 0.02% carbon footprint, compared to letters, and will save c£490k over the contract term.
Our approach builds on ‘Developing a Net Zero Carbon National Health Service (2020)’. To ensure environmental and social value best practice is integral to delivery, we created a Net Zero and Social Value Toolkit, including the actions below and the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environment Impact Mitigation Plan (EIMP) set out in the discovery phase below:
• Work with Approved Organisations (AOs) to collaboratively scope, use bottom-up data to baseline our delivery model.
• Agree environmental and social value requirements, acceptable impact, and which performance metrics to monitor.
• Align interventions to AO Green Plans and/or Carbon Reduction Plans to leverage their established processes.
• Mandate consulting teams to complete SCW online sustainability training module, ensuring awareness, and incorporating environmental best practices in delivery.
• Ensure SCW contractors have completed SCW sustainability training module.
• Adapt our delivery approach to balance carbon reduction against delivery requirements e.g., remote/virtual working, travelling by public transport/lift sharing.
• Partner with local voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations where possible, to deliver additional environmental benefits e.g., through volunteering or pro-bono advice, to further their organisational objectives.
• Ensure SCW suppliers align to our (and customers’) environmental commitments e.g., as part of selection process.Equal opportunity
NHS SCW has proud track record for embedding social value principles, including equal opportunities, within our organisation and with our customers. We recognise our responsibilities under the Social Value Model for reducing disability employment gaps and tackling workforce inequality, for example as evidenced in our digital skills support to systems:
• Clinical Systems training delivered to 850+ GP Practices across Southern England
• Digital literacy eLearning tailored to population needs, part of Health Education England (HEE)’s ‘State of the Nation’ programme.
At NHS SCW, we carry out Equality Impact Assessments to:
• Ensure that decisions and changes we make are appropriate and do not exclude or disadvantage anyone,
• Identify and mitigate any adverse impact,
• Provide assurance that our policies, procedures and practices are equitable,
• Demonstrate compliance to the Public Sector Equality Duty.
Completing EIAs gives us confidence that our policies, services, operations, wellbeing provisions, and functions do what they are designed to do and include and/or benefit everybody.
NHS SCW is largely funded through public funds, it is therefore required by the Equality Act 2010 to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty, albeit somewhat indirectly. In this regard we carry out an equality analysis on our services and any proposals for change. We ensure that all our strategies, policies, services, operational procedures, and functions, both current and proposed, give proper consideration and due regard to the needs of diverse groups in order to:
• Eliminate discrimination.
• Advance equality of opportunity and access and
• Foster good relations between different groups in the community.Wellbeing
At NHS SCW, fostering a sense of belonging is our priority. We create an inclusive environment where every team member feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. Our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is at the heart of our workplace culture.
Our strategy for promoting wellbeing and diversity is structured around five key steps:
• Inclusive Environment: We actively cultivate an atmosphere where everyone thrives.
• Equity and Fairness: We ensure equal opportunities for all.
• Diverse Perspectives: We celebrate and leverage diverse viewpoints.
• Education and Awareness: We provide resources to enhance understanding.
• Continuous Improvement: We adapt and evolve based on feedback.
Our initiatives demonstrate our dedication to transparent recruitment practices and support for our workforce. Here are some examples:
• Change 100: A program fostering inclusivity by offering internships to disabled students.
• Race Equality Jobs Board: Promoting diversity in recruitment.
• Menopause in the Workplace Pledge: Addressing the specific needs of our workforce during menopause.
Additionally, we offer various networks to promote a culture of belonging that include:
• Diversity in Health and Care Partners Connecting professionals across diverse backgrounds to share insights and collaborate.
• BME Leadership Network - Empowering Black and Minority Ethnic leaders within NHS SCW.
• Women Leaders Network - Supporting and advancing women in leadership roles.
• LGBTQ+ Leaders Network - Fostering an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ professionals.
• Southern Disability Support Network - Providing a platform for disability awareness and support.
• Our Gender Pay Gap (GPG) Analysis.
• Implementation of the NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES).
• Adherence to the NHS Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES).
