- Getting started
-
We provide comprehensive support to get you started in using BERRI.
The BERRI assessment checklist gathers information around five themes (Behaviour, Emotional wellbeing, Relationships, Risk & Indicators of neurodevelopment or psychiatric conditions).
We recommend that you discuss the scores with a colleague or someone else who knows the child to give the most reliable results.
To complete the BERRI you read each concern from the questionnaire and then rate the frequency for each issue, and then rate the level of difficulty for those that are present.
You also tick any significant life events that may be affecting a child. You can do this on a paper questionnaire and then transcribe the scores onto the computer, or fill it in directly on a mobile phone, tablet or computer*.
Once completed, the checklist is scored by our online system to produce a comprehensive psychologically-informed profile of the child’s needs.
We then make that data immediately useful to you, with a set of online tools, charts and tables. The scores can be converted into useful advice in the form of a downloadable report which includes interpretation about the meaning of the scores, and what strategies might help to reduce them. - Service documentation

Not applicable. BERRI is a bespoke assessment tool, so other assessment tools would not map in terms of data. Additionally, we do not store any identifiable personal information about the child in our system (such as name, address or date of birth), or written information (such as treatment plans), so that data does not need to be transferred.
All of that said, we would certainly be very happy to work with another supplier and the customer should such a situation arise as ensuring the ongoing support for the child is at the very heart of what we do. - End-of-contract process

We do not export data as BERRI is a bespoke assessment tool, so other assessment tools would not map in terms of data. As we do not store any identifiable personal information about the child in our system (such as name, address or date of birth), or written information (such as treatment plans), that data does not need to be transferred or anonymised. However, we are happy to remove organisation or user account details on request at the end of contract.
We would certainly be very happy to work with another supplier and the customer to ensure the ongoing support for the child during any service transition, as the child's needs are at the very heart of what we do.

- Independence of resources
-
Users will either complete a BERRI offline and then upload their data or directly complete a BERRI online, in the system.
By the varied nature of this input route, it means that the system is incredibly unlikely to become overloaded. However, by locating our system in SiteGround's Google data centres, we have the ability to scale up and scale down resources as required, meaning no one's service is impacted by anyone else's use of the service.

- Metrics types
- Our service metrics cover a whole range of things. We have automated reports, giving scores along with basic advice about each of the 5 domains of need. We use Spider plots illustrating the child’s score on the 5 domains. We can overlay on the chart to show change since last assessment. We have the ability to identify specific goals to address, and track them in more detail over time. We use graphs to visualise changes in behaviours.

Data importing and exporting
- Data export approach
- Users access their data by producing the reports and charts that can be generated within BERRI or by viewing the various management reports. BERRI does not store any child or patient data in the system itself. Aggregate data can be exported in custom reports on request. This data is mostly around reporting population insights, as we use a record number, not patient's personal data, to identify records within the BERRI system, making it secure for children and those involved in their care.

Availability and resilience
- Guaranteed availability
- As our assessments can be completed on paper and entered into the platform later, the need for 24/7 uptime is less important that perhaps for other services. However, that said, our system is available 24/7 and we contract for 99.99% uptime, allowing for some small outages for maintenance, updates, etc. We aim to ensure that during core business hours (9 till 5, Monday to Friday) that we always achieve 100% availability.
- Approach to resilience
-
We use SiteGround's Google tier 4 data centres for our data hosting, with appropriate measures in place to manage the BERRI environment, ensure failover is in place, manage resources and demand, multi-location, etc. This tier comes with an expected uptime of 99.995% per year and a completely fault-tolerant data center with redundancy for every component.
Siteground servers are on Google Cloud which conforms to ISO27001
SiteGround set all servers to use the latest software with the latest security fixes and patches. They run Apache in a chrooted environment with suExec. They have sophisticated IDS/IPS systems which block malicious bots and attackers (Intrusion detection/prevention systems). ModSecurity is installed on all shared servers and updated weekly, protecting customers from the most common attacks. They constantly monitor for vulnerabilities in the most popular applications and modules and whenever possible develop virtual patches in the form of WAF rules (Web application firewall). SiteGround also ensure that users’ data is accessed only by trusted personnel on request by following strict policies and we keep detailed records for such access.
We believe that this approach ensures BERRI is always available and secure. - Outage reporting
- We would alert all customers of any outage via both email and, if the outage was more than a very short interruption, by telephone.

We have an information security policy in place that everyone working for and involved with BERRI adheres, with an annual quiz to check understanding amongst the staff team. We had an external security review in April 2024. We have not yet felt the need to achieve an ISO 27001 type certification within the company (although our server hosting has this), however this is in our business planning.
As BERRI does not store personal data, this helps to reduce the risks around security breaches, albeit we still take all the necessary precautions. - Information security policies and processes

Fighting climate change
As a responsible supplier BERRI does all it can to ensure that we reduce our carbon foot print over time and do not generate more emissions than required. Our office only uses renewable energy (from a ground source heat pump and solar panels) and is carbon neutral.
We use public transport where possible, do most of our work remotely and limit travel. We provide electric vehicle charging for staff and visitors to the office.
In supporting our customers, our solution is online and enables people to collaborate virtually, reducing the need for travel and face to face meetings. We also plant a tree for every new customer who subscribes to BERRI.Covid-19 recovery
The pandemic simultaneously increased the incidence of child mental health difficulties and reduced access to traditional resources to support mental health. BERRI was partly built to address these needs, and to support families during and subsequent to Covid19.
With huge waiting lists generally post pandemic and significant governmental pressure to reduce these, BERRI is enabling more children to have access to mental health screening through local authorities, schools and community organisations. We are acutely aware of the pressures on children and the long waiting lists for mental health and neurodevelopmental assessments. This is in the space in which we work, and can add significant value. We can offer tools to manage waiting lists for CAMHS and neurodevelopmental assessment services, and can offer individualised advice and support to children and families who do not meet the referral criteria for NHS services.
By providing a unique, easy to use, online, assessment tool for managing the care of children with complex needs, we hope to help the NHS and related bodies such as care providers and local authorities to reduce the waiting children and their families face and support Covid 19 recovery.Tackling economic inequality
BERRI's work is centred around children with complex needs, including children who are neurodiverse, have developmental or mental health needs, have experienced trauma or maltreatment, or are known to social care services. Whilst not universally the case, it is often the case that these children also face economic inequality. By getting them the support they need through a BERRI assessment, these children have been shown in our social and economic impact evaluation to have better engagement in education, reduced involvement in the criminal justice system, and lower risk of homelessness, substance misuse, adult mental health problems or next generation child protection concerns. By addressing these interwoven issues and the psychological needs that underpin them we can help to increase employment and life chances, and thus reduce the economic inequality faced by children from vulnerable population groups.Equal opportunity
Working with children who have complex needs, equal opportunity is at the heart of what we do. We help organisations, professionals, caregivers and parents in a wide range of settings to better support children's mental health, attachment or neurodevelopmental needs. Our projects include working with children in care, asylum seekers, young offenders and troubled families, where children often face social exclusion or adverse outcomes. Our assessment process and service delivery aims for not only equality but equity. We change children's life chances for the better, and we use research to support our work.
The BERRI team is an example of valuing diversity and inclusion, as more than 50% of staff have a physical or mental health condition, disability or specific learning difficulty, and some members are care experienced. We also come from diverse backgrounds in terms of race, religion, gender, sexuality and cultural heritage. We are truly an equal opportunity employer.Wellbeing
As an employer, and when supporting colleagues in other organisations, and when working with parents and carers, we operate with the same values of kindness and compassion that we offer our clients, ensuring that they have the support needed for the challenges in life they may face. Our team has clinical supervision, peer support and access to a health scheme.
The very core of BERRI is wellbeing. For our customers, our assessments, consultations and reports help them to manage, deliver and commission services for children with complex needs - supporting their wellbeing in the most effective way possible.
As a small company with long-standing relationships with our contractors, we know our entire supply chain share our values, and only employ people in the UK and pay at least the real living wage (and no modern slavery or suppliers that conflict with our values).
An independent social and economic impact evaluation has shown that BERRI changes the lives of children for the better. It empowers the planning and delivery of services by organisations that use BERRI, enhancing the understanding, care and relationships between parent/carers and children. Over time, BERRI improves the ability of the young person and their network to engage with the community, wider society and economy, generating a 108-fold return for the public purse.
As an employer, and when supporting colleagues in other organisations, and when working with parents and carers, we operate those same values, ensuring that they have the support needed for the challenges in life they may face.
